Considering dipping into 6mm ARC? Here are 5 questions we would ask first before making the plunge:

80% use case:

Think about what you’re using this for 80% of the time realistically. Don’t pretend it’s for this or that, think about what you’re actually going to use it for or what it needs to do.

If you’re shooting 200 yards 90% of the time on a flat range with no need to hunt or compete, a 6mm ARC isn’t going to do anything different for you. You can still build one, you just won’t be able to appreciate the benefits of 6mm ARC.

One of the best pieces of advice we’ve ever received years ago is to double down on 556 ammo and train on that before switching around to a bunch of calibers. We trained on a variety of barrel lengths all in 556 and built a foundation before stepping into longer range cartridges like 308, 6.5cm, and now 6mm ARC.

Our 80% use case was to have small frame rifle with large frame performance. We love this system and it essentially matches or exceed the capabilities of an AR10 we previously had in 6.5cm.

New barrel, new bolt(s), new magazines, and new ammo discovery. All of those are necessary to dip into 6mm ARC. Luckily, there are continuing to be more options for 6mm ARC match, hunting, and FMJ ammo, but it’s all still at least $1 a round or more.

If you’re sitting on a pile of 556 or 308, it’s hard to stack a whole new caliber.

That said, shooting long range is not just about cost per round: it’s about cost per hit.

How far and in what conditions is where statistical analysis comes in for what cartridge makes sense.

Magazines are much more expensive, and buying the right bolt that won’t break is just as important. Moreover, you could still have bolt breakage after extended round counts.

However, if you’re not too deep into one caliber, 6mm ARC is here to stay and there are many good options for parts and ammo.

Is this rifle going to do something different? If you’re hunting pigs or coyotes at 100-200 yards, is 6mm ARC going to make them nap in the dirt any more than an appropriate 308 or 556 round will? Even 300 blackout?

Re*****on Defense MSR/PSR being used by snipers from the US Army Sniper School in an aerial platform shooting stage from the Winston P. Wilson sniper competition held at Fort Chaffee, AR in December of 2025.

Since SASS Concepts started, we have always worked with snipers to build and refine everything from rifle setups to simple things like our Durable D.O.P.E.™️.

During this competition, we were prototyping our glow in the dark, dual sided cards to determine suitability for the conditions anticipated by military, competitive, and hunting use. Our stickers were also in use by another sniper team.

Precision for a Purpose sometimes just means listening and delivering a small solution that consistently performs in a big way.

Collimation in Clip Ons:

If you’ve ever used clip on technology from thermals to night vision, you’ll have encountered some level of point of impact (POI) shift while using the devices.

The problem with using most thermals and clip on technology, is that these devices are usually not collimated, and thus result in POI shifts from rifle to rifle.

When you have various setups and not much time to confirm or check zero, these POI shifts can make getting on target essentially a gamble with your point of aim (POA).

With collimated clip ons, you can usually be certain within 0.1MIL that your POA is your POI.

With non collimated optics, at least for thermals, you have to digitally collimate by shifting the screen to the proper “zero” location, for each rifle.

For us, getting zero confirmation every time we go on another hunt is not always guaranteed, so a collimated thermal saves us a ton of time and ammo, even if it’s not the latest thermal technology.

The nice thing about thermals technology is that while thermals advance constantly, the physical properties of how they view the environment never change because the world itself doesn’t change. If your thermal looks good now, now it will continue to display information with the same clarity, outside of incidents like dead pixels.

This is why still see so many American sensor thermals being traded around and used, because their performance still is passable even with the biannual advancements in thermal technology.
