Saddle fitting is nearly an exact science but if you’re sensitive to real anatomy, scroll past this and don’t look at any photos beyond my brilliant meme…

Sure, there is a little art too, but mostly, saddle fitting is a very precise science- biology, anatomy, gravity, force, momentum, all science…

Recently, I had the incredible privilege of participating in a necropsy at Denali Equine with saddlefitting.us- a very literal lifelong dream come true for me! After years of reading their research, posts, listening to their podcast, I cannot express how much of a gift it was to have the opportunity to participate in this educational endeavor with such a brilliant and meticulous team

This was the 4th necropsy I’ve participated in but the first “standing necropsy”, this allowed us to see the musculoskeletal anatomy most accurately as it pertains to saddle fit

Each photo is labeled and captioned to explain what’s going on and how it pertains to saddle fit

A saddle fitter that doesn’t know the anatomy and how the body functions is like a doctor who slept through half their classes- maybe ok enough when you’re well, but probably not the one you want to trust when you’re having problems and you don’t know what’s wrong or how to fix it

I continue continuing my education because I want to be able to fully explain the why and be a part of your team that helps you avoid problems before they start 💕

None of what you are about to see is the result of poor saddle fit, but rather genetic malformations, a wonderful learning experience none the less. I am forever grateful to all the horses who have taught me so that I may better help other horses, including this one.

You know what matters a flocking lot?
The type of wool, method of insertion used, and the training of your saddle fitter when flocking saddles 😁

I got this saddle in on consignment and while it appeared nearly new, the panels were lumpy and way overflocked in the middle 😱

As inspection continued we discovered 3 different types of wool including non-stübben wool, and yes, it really does make that big of a difference because fiber length and density is a primary factor in how the panels fit and function. Once we got those pieces out it was significantly less lumpy and less overflocked in the center, but it was due for a full strip and reflock with all stübben wool

If you haven’t been to all the stübben training for fitting and flocking you may not know that the tree is semi flexible and thus the fit should always be evaluated with a girth and weight in the saddle before adding wool to the panels.

Stübben saddles purchased through them are inspected at the repair shop and my consignment saddles are inspected, but if you buy a Stübben from a source other than Stübben directly or have a fitter who isn’t Stübben trained adjust your saddle- don’t be surprised if it needs a full reflock

Special thanks to saddlefitting.us for helping me with this reflock!

A snippet of bit fitting at Windurra camp!
This rider kindly allowed us to share their experience with Stübben NA bit expert Xander Boere
The rider, owner, and team had struggled for years to find a bit that the horse worked well in- Xander came in and recommended a bit that the horse was much happier in: the fine line flex kimberwick which is a flexible bit with soft outter foodgrade PU and a flexible metal core that provides tongue relief without pressure on the roof of the mouth. The horse was immediately happier, the rider and their team were thrilled, and Boyd Martin had lovely things to say about the change!
If you’d like to try one: I’ve got demo bits for fittings!
