This past week, board members Bruce Stubblefield, Rebekah Reed (Ex-Officio), and Haley Kidd traveled to Gettysburg with the Medal of Honor Heritage Center Teacher Fellowship. They learned about the leadership lessons and personal stories displayed across the battlefield. A huge thank you to Maranda Wilkinson and Scott Saunders for putting together an amazing teacher fellowship and experience. Also, thank you to Britt Isenberg of the Gettysburg Foundation for the experiences, expertise, and support they provide teacher fellows on this trip!

The Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Chattanooga, TN, provides a variety of resources for Tennessee educators. Learn about field trips, lesson plans, collections, and the Teacher Fellowship on their website.

The Tennessee Council for the Social Studies is proud to be participating in the Tennessee Civics Academy in Memphis this week! Hosted by the Institute of American Civics, this outstanding professional learning experience brings together educators from across the state to strengthen civic knowledge, civil discourse, and student engagement. The academy provides Tennessee teachers with opportunities to explore American history, constitutional principles, civic engagement, and effective classroom practices.

We are excited to connect with educators, share resources, and continue our mission of supporting high-quality social studies education across Tennessee. If you’re attending the academy, stop by and say hello!

History is everywhere—even in the airport and along the streets of New Orleans!

Our first photo features the iconic Louis Armstrong statue at New Orleans International Airport, honoring one of the most influential jazz musicians in American history. Armstrong helped shape the sound of jazz and left a lasting impact on music around the world.

Our second photo highlights the historic Le Branch House, a reminder of New Orleans’ rich and complex past. Historic homes like this provide valuable opportunities to explore the people, cultures, and events that have shaped Louisiana and the United States.

As social studies educators, every landmark, monument, and historic site offers a chance to connect students with the stories of our nation’s past.

What historic sites have inspired your teaching recently? Share them in the comments! Special thanks to board member Nicholas Knowles!
