Long before modern horsepower and GPS, back in the roaring 1920s, American road-tripping wasn't about getting from Point A to Point B as fast as possible. It was an expedition.

In October 1923, historic routes like Tennessee’s stretch of Highway 70 were officially stamped onto the map as part of legendary grassroots projects like the Trail of the Lonesome Pine auto trail—stretching all the way from the industrial roar of Detroit down to the sun of Florida.

Back then, drivers tackled these mountain passes in open-air machines with manual spark advances, mechanical brakes, and a whole lot of grit. No guardrails, no paved shoulders, just winding switchbacks, sweeping vistas of the Cumberlands, and small-town gas stations that doubled as community hubs.

The Walton Road Connection: Portions of US 70 follow the historic Walton Road, which was the very first road built by the state of Tennessee in 1799, originally costing just $1,000 to construct.

Statewide Giant: It is the longest U.S. Highway in Tennessee, stretching 478.48 miles across 21 counties and all three Grand Divisions of the state.

Major Cities: US 70 runs directly through three of Tennessee's major cities: Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville.

Pre-Interstate Mainstay: Before the construction of Interstate 40 (I-40), US 70 was the main thoroughfare across the state. It roughly parallels I-40 for much of its route.
