Justin Halbert is an award winning chef, educator, photographer, husband and father. His artistic passion began young, admiring the graffiti of local artists in San Diego. As he doodled through high school, he found a love for art after taking a few introductory art classes in college. In culinary arts, he found a true match for artistic expression and hard work, combining creativity with his craft. With the demands of full-time work, he turned to photography, quickly amassing a following of over 100K on Instagram as one their elite suggested users, taking pictures strictly with his iPhone. Today he teaches high school students the importance of healthy eating patterns, coaches award winning teen chefs, and takes photos for creative outlet. There’s something about seeing art in person that changes the experience completely.

I’ve seen photos of Banksy’s work for years — the commentary, the anonymity, the way a single image can spark conversation around the world — but walking through this exhibit in San Diego felt different. You slow down. You notice details. You start thinking about the story behind each piece and the moment in time it was created.

What struck me most wasn’t just the art itself, but how many people were standing quietly in front of the same pieces, each interpreting them in their own way. Some laughed. Some took photos. Some just stared.

Art has this ability to create shared space without requiring agreement — only attention.

It also reminded me how much I appreciate living in a place where experiences like this are accessible. From coastal sunsets to unexpected art installations, San Diego constantly offers moments that make you pause and take it in.
