Is it just me or does it happen to you too—you finish your work day and you're looking forward to a restful weekend, but once you sit down to relax, your brain goes crazy and all these thoughts just start racing through your mind?

So frustrating, am I right?

It's because there are two main modes in our brain. Story Mode—where mental loops are made, and Doing Mode—where we focus entirely on what's happening in our physical world right now. They work like a seesaw: when one is up, the other is down.

Telling ourselves to "just relax" doesn't work because our brains default to looping that thought and we stay in Story Mode.

In order to stop the thought trap, we have to shift our focus into a real, physical feeling of grounding in the present moment. By focusing on the weight of our body pressing into the floor, you raise the seesaw into Doing Mode and it calms the thoughts.

I invite you to test it out by commenting RACING to get the link to this week's 20-minute class, Yoga for Presence.

You'd think with all the training I've had I wouldn't get caught up in mental loops during a normal day.

But, I do.

When it happens, I take a moment to check in with myself and notice what's physically happening in my body. Tight shoulders? Shallow breathing? Clenched jaw?

It's why I made this class, Yoga for Presence, for a go-to grounding practice we could use whenever we need to calm those racing thoughts.

Share with me, what are your go-to grounding habits?

This week my mind was all over the place. My thoughts were swirling and I couldn't focus. I had a lot going on.

It felt very overwhelming. It was like being trapped in my head.

So I did what I've learned to do: I turned to my mat. This week's class, Yoga for Presence, is a product of that chaos in my head.

I needed to feel grounded, to connect with my body and come back to the present moment.

Today's the day! 🎉

Our new 20-minute practice, Yoga for Presence: Calm Your Racing Thoughts, is live on YouTube right now!

Take 20 minutes with me to get grounded. When we ground down into heavy contact points (forearms, sit bones, shins), it gives your nervous system a well-deserved break from overthinking.

Why this works: 🧠

Think of your brain as having two main modes that work like a seesaw.

• Story Mode (Default Mode Network): This is the part of your brain that creates mental loops. It rewinds to the past, fast-forwards to worry about the future, and generates all your overthinking.

• Doing Mode (Task-Positive Network): This is the part of your brain that focuses entirely on what is happening right now in the physical world.

Because they sit on a seesaw, they cannot both be up at the same time.

When you focus entirely on the physical weight of your body pressing into the floor, you raise the seesaw up on Doing Mode. By forcing your brain to focus on a real, physical feeling in the present moment, the Story Mode automatically lowers to the ground and gets turned off. Your brain simply does not have the processing power to tell stressful stories while it is actively feeling your body.

Round and round and round and round.

The "hamster wheel of the mind."

How easy is it for your thoughts to just keep circling? 🐹

Ever notice what happens when overthinking shows up in your physical body? That knot between your shoulder blades, shallow breathing, or that tension right between your eyebrows?

Try taking a moment to ground yourself. If you can move to the floor, great—if not, stay right where you are. Notice your contact points: the parts of your body pressing into the surface you're on, like your sit bones or your feet on the floor.

Now soften or close your eyes and take 3 slow, deep breaths. Focus on the physical sensation of the breath rather than the thoughts. It's not a magical cure—just a well-deserved break from the looping.

Tomorrow, a new 20-minute class drops on my channel at 10:00 a.m. ET: Yoga for Presence: Calm Your Racing Thoughts.

Who says you have to do a full studio production class to feel the benefits of yoga?

Not me!

I firmly believe that somatic micro-movements done mindfully deliver just as many benefits as a full-on class.

Try it for yourself! During your day, anytime you notice your body tensing or gripping, stop, roll your shoulders, do a few soft neck rolls, breathe deeply, and see if you feel even a small shift.

If you would like a short 20-minute practice, try Somatic Yoga for Body Awareness on my YouTube channel. Comment BODY and I'll send the link directly to your inbox!

"I can fix it."

That's where my brain goes with just about any issue—including my body. I used to believe that whatever was happening in my body was something that had to be fixed, and most of the time, that just didn't work.

But when I turned to listening to my body and "hearing" what it actually needed, it changed everything. I now approach my week the same way: by listening to what my body is saying and planning accordingly. Honestly, it's made such a big difference in my mindset.

This past week's class, Somatic Yoga for Body Awareness, is a little homage to our bodies. It focuses on fascial hydration, body awareness, and gentleness over force.

Drop the word BODY in the comments to get the 20-minute practice delivered straight to your DMs, or bookmark it for later in the week! 🧡
