I was sitting in high school when the attacks happened on September 11, 2001.

That tells you how old I am.

I remember watching it on TV, and at first, I genuinely thought it was some kind of MADtv skit. It was difficult at that age to comprehend that what we were watching was actually happening.

Of course I knew it was terrible. I knew people were hurting. But at that age, I don't think I truly understood the weight of that day.

Over the years, and especially after joining the fire service, 9/11 began to mean something very different to me.

You learn more about the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and ordinary people who ran toward something everyone else was trying to escape. You see the impact that day had on brothers and sisters in the fire service. You learn about the people who survived the day but carried its physical and mental effects for years afterward.

And you realize the sacrifice didn't end when the towers fell.

The years that followed brought another kind of sacrifice. Americans went overseas, some never came home, and others came home never quite the same. Here at home, first responders and survivors continued becoming sick and dying from illnesses connected to what they were exposed to that day.

“Never Forget” has been said so many times that it can almost feel cliché.

But we shouldn't forget.

Not the ones who gave their lives that morning.

Not the ones who spent the following days and months digging through the rubble.

Not the ones who became sick years later.

Not the families who lost someone.

And not the men and women who answered the call in the years that followed.

September 11th means something different to me today than it did to that kid sitting in a high school classroom watching a television 25 years ago.

And maybe that's exactly why remembering matters.

And more importantly, why?

That last line matters. Without it, you get 50 comments saying “gun.” With it, you get people arguing accessibility, retention, reliability, effectiveness, training, legality, and practicality. That is where the engagement comes from.

I’d also leave the .38 Special completely out of the initial post. When someone inevitably says “I’d rather have a .38,” you can reply, “Absolutely, but then the capability gap changes substantially. I wanted to keep these two roughly comparable in overall size.” Now you have turned one comment into a conversation.
