• FILM SCREENING & DISCUSSION (12-2 PM): Who killed Wharlest Jackson Sr.? In investigating the unsolved 1967 murder of a local NAACP leader, American Reckoning reveals an untold story of the civil rights movement and Black resistance. This film screening will be followed by a discussion about Black organizing facilitated by The New Justice Project MN.
• HEALING JUSTICE STUDIO (2-3:30 PM): Join REP trainers Destiny and Imagine Joy in a healing justice studio! This experience will empower individuals to think and talk about the importance of radical self-care. The offerings include guided conversations, breathwork, somatic grounding, and creative movement. No prior experience is required.
• LUNCH & DOUBLE DUTCH (3:30-6 PM): We will close out the day with a shared meal in the cafeteria and then Double Dutch outside, hosted by Rondo Double Dutch with music by a local DJ.

• OPENING CEREMONY (10-11 AM): Speakers from the REP team will open the space by grounding in the values of Black August and solidarity with political prisoners. This will be followed by an Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, and then transition to the first session of offerings.

• ZINES WITH BAKIBAKIBAKI (11 AM-2 PM): BakiBakiBaki is Black Native artist whose work is based in poetry, chanting, collaging, zine making and multimedia projects. They see art as a radical way of life and utilize their teaching art skills to strengthen community ties and contribute to the legacy of QTPOC art and resilience. They have hosted zine workshops for over a decade and have a personal mission to get all of their communities into self-publishing. They have been performing poetry for over ten years and have been chanting since 2020.

• WRITER’S WORKSHOP (11 AM-12:30 PM): This Writing Workshop facilitated by Mabuya will explore the layers of cultural, racial and embodied lessons that can be learned from the Twin Cities in the aftermath of Operation Metro Surge.

Black August honors Black political prisoners in the United States and beyond through practices of solidarity and radical study. We envision this as an intergenerational public space where organizers, artists, healers, educators, and community members can gather to celebrate, reconnect, create together, and dream forward. This is a space for all Black folks.

We’ve been getting questions around who is encouraged to apply….great question!

This training is open to everyone while being intentionally Black-led, Black-organized, and Black facilitator-centered. During the application process, priority will be given to Black and Brown community members.

We’re also allocating funds to support participation for people who have been historically targeted by the state, including Black people, immigrants, q***r people, Indigenous people, and POC.

No registration required for this information session - Café Hours are a drop-in space! Join us for a beverage and a chat.

What is the Community Training?

Join us October 15–18 in Annandale, Minnesota for a 3-day overnight community training rooted in relationship, care, connection, and collective practice. Together, we’ll explore tools for navigating crisis while building the relationships and shared skills that strengthen our collective capacity. Topics will include de-escalation, pods, mental health first aid, Copwatch, safety planning and more!

An info session is required to receive an application. Come learn more about the training, ask questions, and get connected before applying.

Is this training for you?
• Yes, if you show up in your community when crisis happens and want to be better resourced with tools and for sustainability.
• Yes, if you are deeply engaged in your community and want to share back your expanded knowledge.
