What resistance training does for blood sugar control

Cardio has traditionally been the default exercise recommendation for managing blood sugar. A growing body of meta-analysis evidence on resistance training specifically shows it deserves an equal seat at the table, not just as a bonus, but as a genuinely effective intervention on its own.

🔬 What the pooled data actually shows
Multiple recent meta-analyses focused specifically on adults with type 2 diabetes found resistance training produced measurable, clinically meaningful improvements in blood sugar control.

A meta-analysis of 20 studies (1,172 participants) found resistance training significantly reduced HbA1c, the key long-term blood sugar marker, compared to no training
Fasting blood glucose also improved significantly across pooled trials
Markers of insulin resistance, including HOMA-IR and fasting insulin, showed consistent improvement as well

⚙️ Why lifting specifically helps blood sugar
Muscle tissue is one of the body's primary sites for clearing glucose from the blood. Building and actively using more muscle mass directly expands this glucose-clearing capacity.

Resistance training increased muscle mass in pooled trial data, expanding the tissue responsible for glucose uptake
Muscle contraction itself increases glucose uptake independent of insulin during and after training
