Have you ever wondered why a marathon is exactly 42.195 km ?
AT FIRST, THE MARATHON WAS ABOUT 40 KM.🏃♂️
The race was inspired by the legend of Pheidippides, the Greek messenger said to have run from Marathon to Athens.
But during the first Olympic Games, there was no official marathon distance.
LONDON 1908 CHANGED EVERYTHING.
The royal family wanted the race to :
- start at Windsor Castle;
- finish in front of the royal box at White City Stadium.
The course measured exactly 42.195 km.
In 1921, this distance became the official marathon standard used worldwide.
