As humans, many of us use our hands all day every day working on things in front of us. Driving, typing, writing, texting, eating. We bring things to us with our hands.


So when riding, it’s second nature to do the same. We tend to bring the contact to us. We want to “fix” it in front of us. But the connection between the rider’s hands to the mouth (or head if bitless) should be at the horse’s mouth, not near our lap.

When we try to address the contact at our hands, we bring the contact to us, usually over-curling or compressing the horse’s neck in the process.

Contact is a conversation with the mouth out and away from us. If the conversation feels right at our hands in front of the saddle, then we are likely bringing the horse back to us instead of meeting the horse out in a comfortable frame.
