My backyard grape trellis produced over 15lb of grapes that were guided from my neighbor’s yard (with permission) into mine. Still not sure what kind they are but they’re very tasty and sweet when fully ripe. I juiced a couple big bowls of the fruit then used the scraps to start some vinegar using Alan Bergo recipe for fruit scrap vinegar. Finger’s crossed for good results.🤞The juice itself is great!

Finished up my road trip by spending the last few days in the St. Croix River Valley of WI. What a beautiful area. Found another assortment of mushrooms including some old chickens and hens (seriously, dozens of old Chicken of the Woods) along with the purplest shroom I’ve ever found. (Still a mystery what it is and I didn’t get a spore print. 🤷‍♂️) Fun trip with lots of leg days going up and down hills. Can’t wait for the next one.

I took a little road trip yesterday and drove about 90 miles southeast to a place that has been getting more rain than we’ve gotten here. It sure did make a difference. I left at sunrise and when I got to my targeted location I immediately found a huge flush of yellow-pored boletes that followed a back road for almost a quarter of a mile. I found a few lobster mushrooms and chanterelles, oyster mushrooms, even an old Chicken of the Woods. (I mistimed the fruiting of this chicken three years in a row!) Mushrooms were sprouting everywhere. I even found my first stinkhorn. 😀 Took a little detour on the drive home just to get a little beach time—something I haven’t done in a couple years. Nice day to be out.

A first ever find for me: a Veiled Stinkhorn! I’m happy as a pig in…you know…to have found it! Speaking of, want to know why it’s called a stinkhorn? Do like I did: pick one, put it in the car, then drive home for an hour. You will question your decision for at least 59 and a half minutes. But isn’t it a beauty? Also, notice how the veil extended further on the drive home. What a cool mushroom—one I didn’t think I would ever find.

A private outing today: had a great foraging trip with Jason and Melissa and visited a place where neither one had ever been. Mushrooms were not the target today, instead we were after blackberries, chokecherries, and whatever remnants of raspberries and blueberries we could find. (Not much.) Despite the dry conditions as of late, we still found plenty of nice blackberries, plus the chokecherries were thick! (Now is the time to get them, folks. They are everywhere.) We even got into a bonus patch of beeked hazelnuts that were also plentiful. It’s very tough to get those before the critters do. The weather was awesome and so were my companions. What a fun trip and a nice haul of free goodies that not everyone takes advantage of.

Ok, just hear me out. Yes, I said I was going to stop picking blueberries. Twice. But first of all, I had my fingers crossed—which is legal and would pretty much stand up in court—and second, I was actually picking mushrooms and the blueberries were an afterthought until I found a patch of HUGE ones. See for yourselves. BTW, you should see the blueberries I had to leave behind! 😩 (for now)
