The Lufkin Panthers (1-2, 0-1) will visit the Baytown Sterling Rangers (3-0, 1-0) on Friday night September 18th at 7 PM. This will be the 2nd district game in 9-5A DI for both teams. Last week the Panthers lost a hard fought game at Abe Martin to the #4 team in 5A DI the (3-0,1-0) Port Arthur Memorial Titans 29-7, a game that was 13-7 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The Sterling Rangers traveled to the New Caney Eagles (0-3, 0-1) and won a tough 28-27 decision at Randall Reed Stadium. Last year in district Lufkin won a tight 31-21 win over Sterling at Stallworth Stadium. This will only be the second meeting between the two schools as Baytown Sterling.

The Panthers are coming off a 29-7 loss to No. 4 Port Arthur Memorial in the District 9-5A DI opener Friday at Abe Martin Stadium.

Lufkin (1-2, 0-1) will be on the road to face Baytown Sterling (3-0, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Stallworth Stadium.

The Lady Panthers won their first district match Tuesday night against the Bryan Rudder Rangers in Bryan. It was a straight set sweep, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-18. That brings their record to 1-2 in district 17 5-A play and an overall record of 12-22.

The Lady Panthers will host Lake Creek in another district match this Thursday at the PAC at 6 pm.

Lufkin ISD plans to move its two-year-old turf and track from Abe Martin Stadium to Lufkin Middle School as part of a $42 million bond renovation at the high school.

The renovation will bring new turf and a new track to Abe Martin Stadium. Athletic Director Carl Abseck said the project benefits the district’s programs.

“Part of this is in a in a good a good way that it benefits our programs through top to bottom,” Abseck said.

It was a defensive battle all night between the last two District 9-5A DI champs.

Lufkin’s relentless defense kept the game close, with Port Arthur Memorial holding a 13-7 halftime lead by taking advantage of two short fields to score.

But the No. 4 Titans capped a 99-yard drive with a touchdown run by Pierre Gray early in the fourth period and added a field goal and another late touchdown to escape Abe Martin Stadium with a hard-fought 29-7 win over the Panthers in the district opener for both teams.

It was a defensive battle all night between the last two District 9-5A DI champs.

Lady Panthers traveled to College Station tonight and lost their 2nd district 17-5A match to A&M Consolidated (2-0) by a 3 set sweep 15-25, 8-25 and 18-25. That brings their overall record to 11-22.

They will travel to Bryan Rudder on Tuesday for their 3rd district match of this season.
