“Losing is not always losing.”
That’s a line from my book, Art of War, Art of Tennis.
The full quote: “Losing is not always losing. Not being able to analyze why the loss happened is a true loss.” (p.113)
Most players walk off court from a loss and do one of two things. Blame something external (wind, line calls, opponent got lucky). Or bury the memory of the match because it hurts too much to sit with.
Both cost you the same thing.
The players who move up are the ones who can sit with a loss for 20 minutes after the match and answer three questions.
1. What patterns did I lose the most points on?
2. What was I trying to do that wasn’t working?
3. What’s one thing I’ll do differently next match?
That’s the actual loss you’re avoiding when you skip that 20 minutes.
Art of War, Art of Tennis came out in 2016. Every chapter opens with a Sun Tzu line and ends with a tennis move.

“My feet slid inside my shoes every match.”
