The New York Knicks get their name from “Knickerbockers,” a nickname connected to early Dutch heritage in New York. The term originally referred to the loose, baggy, knee-length pants worn by Dutch settlers in colonial times, and over time “Knickerbocker” became a nickname for New Yorkers themselves. When the basketball team was founded in 1946, ownership wanted something that felt distinctly tied to New York’s identity and history, so they chose New York Knickerbockers, later shortened to Knicks. Even though most fans today think of basketball before old fashioned clothing, the name is actually a small piece of the city’s colonial past carried into modern sports.

The signature orange and blue colors of the New York Knicks were chosen to reflect the colors of the official flag of New York City, creating a direct connection between the team and the city it represents. Those colors trace back to New York’s Dutch roots and appear on the city flag alongside white. Since the team’s founding in 1946, the bright orange and deep blue became some of the most recognizable colors in basketball and helped give the Knicks a strong hometown identity. Rather than choosing colors simply for style, the team built its visual identity around New York’s history, making every jersey and logo feel tied to the city itself.

The Stanley Cup carries one of the most recognizable names in sports because of Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley. In 1892, while serving as Canada’s Governor General, Stanley donated a simple decorative silver bowl to be awarded each year to the best amateur ice hockey team in the Dominion of Canada. What began as a modest trophy quickly became the ultimate prize in hockey as the sport exploded in popularity across North America. Unlike most championship trophies, the Stanley Cup is not remade each year, the same historic Cup has evolved over generations, with winning players, coaches, and staff having their names engraved onto it. Today, it is awarded annually to the champion of the National Hockey League and remains one of the oldest and most prestigious trophies in professional sports.
