5/10 UPDATE! See Below
As of early May 2026, a black bear that was roaming the Sun Valley and Shadow Hills area near Hansen Dam has been successfully captured by wildlife officials.
Capture: The bear was spotted over several days in early May 2026, roaming backyards, climbing trees, and causing school lockdowns in the Pacoima area.
Method: California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials tranquilized the bear after it was spotted in the Shadow Hills area near Sun Valley.

5/10 UPDATE!
Result: The bear was safely captured, tagged, and relocated to the Angeles National Forest.
Condition: Wildlife officials identified it as a healthy, roughly 275-pound bear, and reported that it did not exhibit aggression towards people, making it a "no harm, no foul" situation, allowing for relocation rather than euthanasia.

It Appears The Bear Has Made His Way Back Into The Dam Basin, LAPD & Fish & Wildlife Agents Have Backed Off. Probably A Good Idea To Avoid Hansen Dam Area For A Few Days & Hopefully The Bear Will Move On.. Stay Safe Everyone!

A 5th Fish & Wildlife Unit Has Arrived. It Now Appears There Are 5 Uniformed Fish & Wildlife Officers & A 6th Possibly A Supervisor or A Veterinary Dr. That Is Out Of Uniform.
