The 3 Words Roger Federer Says Make A Great Coach | Emma Doyle | Ep. 12 08/12/2026

I had such a fun and refreshingly honest conversation with Nancy Girres on the Finding North Podcast. 🎙️

We covered a LOT - from Melbourne 🇦🇺 to Colorado 🇺🇸, some unexpected life turns, and plenty of laughs along the way. We spoke of coaches and mentors who have helped to shape my journey, and we also went deep into a few coaching ideas I’m really passionate about right now:

🧅 The Onion Principle - how do we peel back the layers to uncover and maximize the strengths people already bring to the workplace?

❤️ Leader as Human (new Vistage workshop) - including a life-changing question that might just change the way you show up as a leader.

🌱 And one simple sentence that has helped me GROW to the next level - not go to the next level.

There’s a BIG difference.

Curious? 👀

A huge thank you to Nancy Girres for being such a wonderful listener, asking great questions, a CO Vistage chair, and creating the space for such an honest, fun conversation.

🎙️ New Episode Drop with Leadership Coach Jon Purpura

What if the best leaders stopped trying to have all the answers?

This week on The Coaching Podcast, I sat down with Jon Purpura, Founder of Elevate Advisory and former United Airlines leader, to explore what it really takes to create workplaces where people want to show up.

A few of my favourite takeaways:

✅ Great coaching starts with great listening.
✅ Vulnerability creates the psychological safety for honest conversations.
✅ Confidence grows through acknowledgment, not just feedback.
✅ Executive presence isn't about being louder. It's about your body language, eye contact, and slowing down when it matters most.

And his reminder that perfectly sums up great coaching:

"The quality of our lives and leadership is determined by the quality of the questions we ask ourselves and others."

Thanks, Jon, for sharing your wisdom and contagious positivity. I know leaders everywhere will take something practical from this conversation.

How do you motivate people?

It's one of the questions I'm asked most often by leaders.

My answer usually surprises them.
Stop trying to motivate people.

Instead, create an environment where motivation is ignited and grows over time.

In this month's Coach EM Vlog, I explore why motivation isn't about bigger speeches or better incentives. It's about better coaching conversations.

Three coaching questions every leader can ask more often:

• What motivates you? (Everyone has a different story.)

• Why are you in this role? (Purpose drives performance.)

• What does success look, sound, and feel like for you? (The environment you create matters.)

It's not rocket science - and do you know the answers for each of your team members? Because what you do with the information next is critical ...

If you're a leader, manager, coach, or simply passionate about helping people unleash human potential, I'd love you to join the Coach EM Vlog community.

Just 12 emails a year. On the 1st of each month (drops tonight), you'll receive:

One practical leadership coaching insight.
A coaching tool you can apply immediately.
Real stories from my travels working with leaders around the world.
Exclusive resources and early access to new programs.

If you're ready to build a coaching culture where people don't just work harder – they want to contribute more – I'd love to have you along.

#100 Vistage Workshops: The Century

After being accepted as a Vistage speaker, it took me 12 months to land my first workshop.

How did it finally happen?

A Vistage Chair in Seattle responded to a cold LinkedIn message. She generously shared her top 10 tips on how to build momentum as a Vistage speaker. Those insights were invaluable.

This week, to celebrate my 100th Vistage workshop, we finally met in person.

And how fitting that, thanks to Steve Crabtree and Don Barton, at the Seattle Yacht Club, hosted by Austen Wilson, I delivered my century: 100 Vistage workshops in 2.5 years, helping leaders build coaching cultures they can apply immediately in the workplace.

Around 70 of those workshops have been in the US, with another 30 across Australia and New Zealand. I am incredibly grateful to be part of a truly global organisation, and I cannot wait to explore Vistage Europe in the years ahead.

And if I had to share the three comments I hear most often from members, they would be:

1. “This was immediately practical and applicable.”

2. “Wow, I didn’t realise how much more I need to listen and stop solving everyone’s problems.”

3. “The energy was fantastic. Learning through play made the experience memorable.”

My biggest takeaway?
Success isn't built on one big break.

It's built on hundreds of conversations, thousands of questions, and showing up with energy every single time.

Keep getting after it. And thank you to every Vistage Chair, Member, and the global Vistage community who have welcomed me into your groups, challenged my thinking, and trusted me to be part of your leadership journey.

🎙️ NEW EPISODE: Know Your Player with Mike Sell

What if the secret to becoming a better coach isn't knowing more about the sport... but knowing more about the person?

In this episode of The Coaching Podcast, I sit down with former ATP professional, Olympic coach, and LTP Academy Co-Director Mike Sell to explore why great coaching starts with understanding how each individual learns, develops, and performs.

We discuss:
- Coaching the person before the player
- Why every practice should have purpose - no wasted rep's
- The importance of staying calm under pressure
- Why coaches need a second set of eyes to keep improving
- The danger of over-coaching
- How great leaders ask questions, listen deeply, and lead by example
- Mike's advice for parents: "Lay the seed for your child to go get whatever it is they want."

Whether you're a coach, leader, parent, or educator, this conversation is packed with practical wisdom you can apply immediately.

Back in Minneapolis this week... and one theme kept showing up in every workshop.

How do you create an army of problem-solvers instead of becoming everyone's problem solver?

The answer is simpler than we often realize:

**Coach first. Mentor second (if and when it's needed).**

When leaders slow down, listen, and ask curious questions like:

"What energizes you most in the workplace?"

they stop solving every problem and start unlocking people's strengths. That's how you build ownership. That's how you create a coaching culture.

A huge thank you to Vistage Chair Dave Heine for bringing everyone together. Your organization, care, and commitment to serving your members is second to none.

It was a privilege to spend time with so many wonderful leaders:

✅ Day 1: Hosted by Michelle Daggett at Lakeshirts, plus learning about the incredible work of Jack's Basket – because every baby is worthy of celebration. Appreciate the hospitality, Carissa Carroll.

✅ Day 2: Hosted by Becky Krieger at the brand-new Accredited Investors Wealth Management offices... complete with pickleball courts!

✅ Day 2 (Part 2): Great to work alongside Vistage Chair Lisa Bormaster and the fantastic team from Verde Clean. Thank you for the opportunity to coach you, Paul Saroza.

✅ Day 3: Hosted by Pat Bartels from Minnesota Reload & Freight Warehousing at the outstanding training facilities of IDI Distribution - appreciate it, Chris Novogratz.

And as many of you know, whenever I'm back in a city from Chapter 2 of my career, I love reconnecting with my tennis community. It was wonderful catching up with Bruce Gullikson and family, Bart Kosen, and Isaac McBroom, cheering on Spain at Brit's Pub, and fitting in a few walks around some of Minnesota's beautiful lakes.

Three days.
Four workshops.
Hundreds of conversations.
One reminder:

Curiosity creates possibility.
Coach first. Mentor second.

Coach EM Gem 💎 - Are We Speaking the Same Language?

Be mindful of your assumptions and listen beyond the spoken words to the meaning that people are creating.

Communication is a two-way street and can only be successful when the other person understands what you mean.

As leaders, coaches, parents, and teammates, we often assume our message is clear because it makes perfect sense to us.

Clarity lives with the listener.

Before you move on, ask:

What did you hear?
What does that mean to you?
Can you explain that back to me in your own words?

Those simple questions can transform understanding, reduce assumptions, and build stronger relationships.

Because effective communication isn't what you say, it's what they hear.

💚 Live inspired.
💜 Practice improving.
💙 Lead with impact.

Talk with Meaning. What difference do you want to make? In this episode of The Coaching Podcast, Dr. Erina Reddan challenges us to rethink communication. It’s not about what you want to say - it’s about them. What value can you bring? What possibility do you want to create? We explore the power of story, why great communication needs both logical and emotional clarity, and how all leadership is enacted through communication. Before the next time you are in a meeting, on a stage, trying to get up your project, ask yourself:

What difference do I want to make?
