Paying more out of pocket doesn’t always mean receiving a higher level of lactation care.
Different lactation credentials represent different levels of education, clinical experience, and scope of practice.
For general encouragement and education, several types of support may be helpful. But concerns such as ongoing pain, poor milk transfer, slow weight gain, supply challenges, or complicated feeding situations may require the clinical training of an IBCLC.
Here’s the part many families don’t realize: IBCLC care may be covered by your health insurance, while another service with less clinical training may require you to pay fully out of pocket.
Before hiring someone, ask:
• What credential(s) do you hold?
• Is this concern within your scope?
• Will you refer me to another provider or service if I need a higher level of care?
• Can this visit be billed through my insurance?
At Lincoln Lactation, Melissa and Anna are IBCLCs. We accept many insurance plans and offer in-home and telehealth support.
✨ Check your coverage before paying out of pocket for care that may already be included in your benefits. ✨

When you’re just beginning, it can be hard to picture where your breastfeeding journey will lead, especially with your first baby.
Will feeding feel comfortable?
Will you need to pump?
How often will baby eat?
What will returning to work look like?
While you don’t have to have every answer before baby arrives, a prenatal visit with an IBCLC can help you understand what’s typical, talk through your goals, and create a flexible plan for the early days.
That way, your expectations are based on your family’s needs.
Not pressure, comparison, or guesswork.
Every feeding journey is different, and plans can change. We’re here to help you feel informed, prepared, and supported along the way. 🤍

Pumping more often beats pumping longer for more than one reason.
First, when milk supply needs extra support, adding a few shorter “micro pumping” sessions signal to your body that it needs to make more milk. 🍼
Plus, they may be easier to fit into your busy schedule than waiting for one long session later.
That may look like:
⭐ Ensuring you exercise your rights to pump during the workday
⭐ Adding a brief session when your schedule allows with an in-bra pump
⭐ Occasionally pumping overnight, even if baby is sleeping longer 💤
Research suggests that milk supply is influenced largely by how frequently milk is removed, especially when you’re regularly separated from your baby.
A personalized pumping plan should support your supply, your sleep, workday, and wellbeing.

Feed the baby, not the freezer. 🤍
A freezer stash can be helpful, but it does not need to be the goal.
Your baby needs milk now. You do not need dozens of ounces stored away to prove that feeding is going well.
Build a stash only when it serves your family; not because social media made it feel required.
Every family’s needs are different. We can help you make a plan that fits yours.

Breast shaping isn’t automatically necessary, but sometimes it can be helpful.
There’s been a welcome shift toward a more hands-off approach to feeding support in general and we agree that parents and babies shouldn’t be over-corrected when feeding is already working well. 🙅♀️
That’s why at Lincoln Lactation, we always start by observing. 👀
We look at:
🤱 How baby is latching
🤱 Whether feeding is comfortable
🤱 How milk transfer appears
🤱 What you’re already doing that works
If there isn’t a problem, we don’t need to create one.
But when a family comes to us because feeding is painful, ineffective, or challenging, hands-on techniques may sometimes help, including breast shaping or positioning support.
The goal isn’t to make feeding more complicated. It’s to offer the right amount of support for your specific situation, then help you feel confident doing it on your own. 💜

Not all lactation support is the same, and understanding the differences can help you find the care that's right for your family. 🤍
The term "lactation consultant" isn't regulated, which means people with very different levels of education and clinical training may use similar titles.
That doesn't mean one type of support is "good" and another is "bad." Friends, family, peer counselors, doulas, and certified lactation specialists all play valuable roles in supporting new families.
But if you're experiencing ongoing pain, concerns about milk supply, latch difficulties, slow weight gain, or other complex feeding challenges, it's important to know that IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) have the highest level of clinical training in lactation care.
At Lincoln Lactation, Melissa and Anna are both IBCLCs. We believe every family deserves compassionate, evidence-based support and the information needed to make confident decisions about their care.
Have questions about what kind of support is right for you? We'd be happy to help.
