We have some news to share with you, and it’s quite exciting! Traditionally, fire departments across the country have started shifts at 8:00 AM. At North Lyon Fire, we’ve made the decision to move our shift change to 10:00 AM, and there’s a good reason why.
This change is rooted in firefighter health, safety, and the latest research on fatigue.
Firefighters rarely get an uninterrupted night’s sleep while on duty. Overnight emergency calls can significantly reduce the amount of restorative sleep we receive: the deep and REM sleep that our bodies and brains rely on to recover. Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health recently found that firefighters working overnight experience substantially less restorative sleep while on duty than when they are off duty. As nighttime call volume increases, restorative sleep decreases, resting heart rate rises, and heart rate variability declines - all indicators associated with increased fatigue and reduced cognitive performance.
By moving shift change to 10:00 AM, our firefighters who have been busy throughout the night have additional time to recover before making the drive home. Likewise, incoming personnel have more time to obtain adequate sleep before reporting for duty rather than beginning their shift during the early morning hours when many people are naturally at their lowest level of alertness.
Yale researchers concluded that later shift start times are one of the practical, evidence-based strategies departments can use to reduce the effects of chronic sleep disruption and operational fatigue.
For our community, nothing changes; you’ll still receive the same professional emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. What does change is our commitment to making evidence-based decisions that support the health of our firefighters and help ensure they’re at their best when you need them most.
Because when your firefighters are healthier, better rested, and more alert, everyone benefits.
