Team Tennessee | Winning Words Wednesday

It’s wild to think our 14U chapter is almost over.

When I look back at this spring, I see growth. We’ve gotten stronger, grown closer, and learned a lot. But I also know we still have room to grow.

Honestly, I hope we always have room to grow.

The day we think we’ve got it all figured out is the day we stop getting better.

Most people think we’re teaching girls how to hit, throw, and catch.

We’re really teaching them how to face adversity. How to respond to failure. How to stay calm under pressure. How to keep fighting when things don’t go their way.

Because life is going to test you.

There will be hard days.

There will be people who doubt you.

There will be moments when quitting feels easier than pushing forward.

The question isn’t whether those moments will come.

The question is what you’ll do when they do.

James 1:2-4 says,

“Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

God never promised we’d avoid trials.

He promised those trials would produce something in us if we keep going.

That’s exactly what this game does.

It builds perseverance.

It builds character.

It builds young women who are ready for whatever life puts in front of them.

This weekend in Myrtle Beach is our last tournament as a 14U team. Ever.

When the final out is recorded, this chapter closes.

Let’s make sure we leave it with no regrets.

Play hard.

Play together.

Play for each other.

Leave everything on that field.

Let’s finish the 14U chapter the way it deserves to be remembered.

🏖️ The countdown is officially on!

In just a few days, Team Tennessee Bucklen will be making the trip to Myrtle Beach to compete in the Myrtle Beach Summer Nationals Tournament. Before the first pitch is thrown, we want to introduce the players who have earned the opportunity to represent our team.

This group has spent the season putting in the work, supporting one another, and chasing a common goal. Now it's time to take the field, compete with confidence, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

We're proud of every player on this roster and can't wait to see what this team accomplishes on the big stage.

Meet Team Tennessee Bucklen. 🥎

The roster is set. The bags are almost packed. The countdown is on. 🌴

In just a few short days, Team Tennessee Smith will be heading to play in the Myrtle Beach Summer Nationals. Before we hit the road, we're excited to re-introduce the athletes who will be representing our team.

These girls have put in the work, trusted the process, and earned the chance to compete on one of the biggest stages of the season. We couldn't be prouder of this group and can't wait to watch them do what they love.

Please help us congratulate our very own Amelia Williams on being selected to the TWSA All State Softball Team! 🥎

This honor wasn’t given. It was earned, all on your own (and mom driving you) with countless hours of practice. Extra swings. Extra reps. Early mornings. Long weekends. A commitment to getting better every single day.

Hard work always has a way of showing itself.

We’re incredibly proud of you, Amelia. Congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. Your Team Tennessee family is cheering you on!

Congratulations, Amelia! 🧡💙

Winning Words Wednesday

This past weekend tested us.

Not because of softball.

Because of people.

There were things said that shouldn’t have been said. Parents arguing with each other. Adults getting caught up in the moment. Our girls being yelled at. Our parents being challenged.

I’ll be honest…

I got frustrated too.

Looking back, I even became part of the problem for a moment instead of part of the solution.

I’m not proud of that.

But maybe that’s the lesson.

Character isn’t tested when everything is going your way.

Character is revealed when things aren’t.

Anybody can be respectful when they’re winning.

Anybody can stay calm when everyone agrees with them.

The real test is how we respond when we’re frustrated, when emotions are high, and when people don’t treat us the way they should.

James 1:19 says:

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

I wish I had remembered that a little sooner this weekend.

The good news is this…

Growth doesn’t come from pretending we got everything right.

It comes from being honest enough to admit where we can be better.

That’s what I expect from our girls.

And that’s what I should expect from myself.

We’ll continue to play hard.

We’ll continue to compete.

We’ll continue to stand up for each other.

But we’ll also continue learning that how we respond is just as important as the scoreboard.

Because long after people forget who won the game, they’ll remember how we carried ourselves.

Let’s keep building young women who compete with passion, lead with character, and never let someone else’s actions determine their own.

🥎 AFTER DARK SHOWDOWN RECAP 🥎

Sometimes the biggest victories don’t end with a trophy.

Sometimes they end with belief.

This weekend was never just another tournament for Team Tennessee 29 Smith.

Beginning in September, we move to 16U full time. Instead of waiting to see what that level looked like, we decided to jump in now. We wanted our girls to experience the speed, the physicality, and the competition before it counted.

We wanted to answer one question.

Are we ready?

Game one gave us a wake-up call.

The first game of the morning. Our first 16U tournament. A talented Chattanooga Venom team across the field. We battled, but one big inning was the difference in an 8-3 loss.

Sometimes you have to get hit before you realize you can hit back.

And that’s exactly what these girls did.

Game two was a completely different story.

The bats came alive.

The dugout came alive.

The confidence came alive.

We attacked from the first pitch, played clean defense, got great pitching, and rolled to an 11-3 victory.

Then came game three.

If anyone was wondering whether this team belonged in 16U, they got their answer.

Four runs in the first.

TEN runs in the second.

Hit after hit.

Play after play.

Karley Smith drove in three.

Aubree Goff continued to swing a hot bat.

Alexandria Clare, Isabella Dixon, Allie Moynihan, Ralyn Wilson, Amelia Williams, Alexzandra Smith… it felt like every girl found a way to impact the game.

That’s what makes this team dangerous.

It’s never just one player.

It’s every player believing the next big moment could belong to them.

The 14-2 win earned us one more shot at Chattanooga Venom under the lights.

And I’ll be honest…

That final game may have been my favorite game we’ve played all season.

Not because of the result.

Because of the way our girls competed.

It was everything you hope a softball game can be.

Momentum swings.

Big defensive plays.

Timely hits.

Every pitch mattered.

Every out mattered.

Our girls never looked intimidated.

They never looked overwhelmed.

They looked like they belonged.

When Karley Smith tied the game in the third, our dugout erupted. Every player believed we were about to win that game.

In the end, Venom found a walk-off hit to win it 3-2.

That’s softball.

It hurts.

But as I watched our girls walk off the field, I couldn’t have been more proud.

They stood toe to toe with older competition and never backed down.

They competed with confidence.

They competed with toughness.

They competed with heart.

There was one disappointing part of the weekend, and it had nothing to do with the girls on the field. At times, the atmosphere from the stands wasn’t what youth sports should be.

But our girls never let it change who they were.

They stayed focused.

They encouraged each other.

They respected the game.

They represented Team Tennessee with class from the first pitch to the last.

That’s something no scoreboard can measure.

We leave Cleveland with a 2-2 record and a third-place finish.

Some people will see third place.

I see a team that answered every question we had.

I see a group of 14-year-old girls who proved they can compete with anyone in 16U.

I see confidence.

I see growth.

I see teammates becoming sisters.

Most of all, I see a team that’s ready for what’s next.

Next stop is Myrtle Beach for Summer Nationals.

Then we’ll wrap up our season where our future begins, competing one more time at 16U in the Big Orange Showcase right here in Knoxville.

If this weekend showed us anything…

It’s that these girls aren’t just moving up because of their age.

They’re moving up because they’re ready.

I’m proud of every single one of them.

Now let’s go finish this season the right way.
