Why Smart Executives Still Ask Permission
Your executives may not have an ownership problem.
You may have a decision-rights problem.
Ask your leadership team:
“What decisions can you make without me?”
If the room goes quiet, you have your answer.
Decisions usually travel upward for four reasons:
Authority. Who owns the call?
Threshold. Where does their authority stop?
Fear. Is being wrong punished more than being slow?
Habit. Has everything always come to the CEO?
And CEOs can accidentally create the dependency by always being available to help.
This week, ask: “What authority do you need to make this decision without me?”
