If you don’t have a ranch to work your horse on, you can mimic a lot of the ranch work by riding on trails & roads… just get them out of the arena as much as possible for as long as possible! Make them DO a job (open gates, navigate brush & water, track your dog instead of cows 😁).

Horses don't work these days. Loping a few circles in an arena, getting pulled into a frame between the bridle reins while having their rib cages spurred on, isn't work. Being bent left and right, with their noses off the center line and two tracking up the wall, doesn't go as far toward developing an equine partner as what we have already asked of this group of horses prior to standing ground tied in the middle of a herd of cows while we unload salt.

They know that standing still while we fumble around lifting fifty pound salt bags out of the panniers draped over their saddles is the correct response. They have figured this out because they have been moving their feet so much traveling between pastures that their brain is in thinking mode. They are worked into calmness. They are worked gentle. The cows crowd in close, jostling one another, maybe a curious calf reaches out and licks their tail, and these horses mostly shift their weight in their hips and sigh.

No horse whispering here. Just plain old fashioned common sense work. We need good horses to do our jobs, and steady miles make good willing horses. All the loping circles in the world, will not do for these animals what a real job, day in day out, on the ranch will. Anything after this, is a cake walk.

Baby Mustang Thunder went from being “dragged” down the road to being ponied on a loose rope at the trot in just 2 sessions! Ponying young/green horses is an excellent way to expose them to lots of new sights & sounds in a short time.

Welcome back, Capella!!!!! This little Mustang was Claire’s first Extreme Mustang Makeover project back in 2021. For the past 3 years she has been well loved & cared for by a wonderful family. Sadly, due to some life changes, they weren’t able to keep her. We are so thankful for the opportunity to welcome her back to Newberry Farm where she will be an asset to our program. Mustang Capella is home to stay!
