REGISTRATION CLOSES THIS SUNDAY, SEP 6!

LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER for the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG) San Diego, CA Surf Responder & Ocean Safety Summit on Sept 12–13.

This two-day training is designed for surfers and ocean enthusiasts of all backgrounds, skill levels, and abilities. The course teaches essential ocean safety skills with hands-on practical training so you can respond confidently and effectively in emergency situations—for others or yourself.

Participants who complete the training will receive an official BWRAG Certificate of Completion.

One of the greatest measures of success for any educational program is when the students become the teachers.

Last month, the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG) team partnered with Ben Carlson Foundation, the Puerto Escondido surf community, and Amisurf Puerto Escondido to develop a localized surf instructor curriculum built for the unique waves, hazards, and culture of the Oaxaca coastline, and provide training equipment to support continued education. Our goal was not simply to teach another course, but to create something the community could truly own.

We spent the first week training 25 local surfers, lifeguards, and community leaders to become instructors themselves. They immediately put that training into action, leading the program and certifying more than 250 local surf coaches over the next seven days.

Watching these newly trained instructors stand before their peers, sharing lessons shaped by their own experience, local knowledge, and deep connection to the coastline, was one of the most rewarding parts of the project. It marked the beginning of something far greater than a successful course: a community-led program built to endure.

And this is only the beginning.

The curriculum is now in the hands of the community, with plans to bring it to surf towns throughout Oaxaca. The result is a sustainable, locally led education program that will continue strengthening coastal communities and making the ocean safer for years to come.

This project would not have been possible without the incredible support of Ben Carlson Foundation and its commitment to water safety education and empowering coastal communities.

Above all, we are deeply grateful to the local instructors, lifeguards, and surf community who embraced this program with such dedication.

When Brian Keaulana, BWRAG’s original mentor, first shared this knowledge with us, he asked for one promise: “share the knowledge.” The Puerto Escondido community honored that promise in the most meaningful way imaginable.

At Surf Guide MX, we believe that learning never stops. We were proud to host BWRAG in Baja California Sur for an Surf Responder and Ocean Safety Training focused on rescue techniques, jet ski operations, CPR, AED, first aid, and teamwork.

This experience brought together instructors and members of the local surf community with one shared goal: to be better prepared when the ocean demands it.

A huge thank you to BWRAG for sharing their knowledge and to everyone who participated with commitment and enthusiasm.

The ocean gives us so much. Preparing to protect each other is part of respecting it.

Ya están abiertas las inscripciones para el próximo Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG) Surf Responder & Ocean Safety Summit en Lima, Perú, que se realizará el 22 y 23 de agosto de 2026.

Esta capacitación de dos días está diseñada para surfistas y amantes del mar de distintos contextos, niveles de experiencia y habilidades. El curso enseña habilidades esenciales de seguridad oceánica a través de entrenamiento práctico, para que puedas responder con confianza y eficacia ante situaciones de emergencia, ya sea para ayudar a otras personas o a ti mismo/a.

Las personas que completen la capacitación recibirán un Certificado de Finalización oficial de BWRAG.

Olas de hasta 6 metros y el 2do día del B.W.R.A.G, marcaron una jornada inolvidable

El 2do día del B.W.R.A.G. (Big Wave Rescue And Gathering) comenzó con todo lo que los pronósticos anticipaban; un potente swell sur que levantó olas de hasta 6 metros en Punta de Lobos, ofreciendo una de las sesiones más intensas en lo que va del otoño invierno.

El viento y las condiciones irregulares del mar impidieron que las olas se presentaran completamente limpias, mostrándose varios point frente a Los Morros, dificultaron el posicionamiento de los atletas en el lineup.

En el agua estuvieron presentes referentes de la escena internacional, como Ramón Navarro y Kohl Christensen, además de representantes de las nuevas generaciones, entre ellos los hermanos Fuenzalida, Santi y Matías Guerrero, los ariqueños Roberto Ilufín y Guillermo Satt, entre muchos otros ... . Todos enfrentando una mañana exigente.

Sin embargo, una de las imágenes más destacadas de la jornada fue la participación Dominga Charrier, Colomba Niemes y Cata Escobar.

Domi tomó olas bastante inside, ripiando frente a los morros de manera impecable; Colomba y Cata bajaron grandes masas, teniendo que soportar grandes cantidades de espuma al cerrar la ola, lo que tuvo algunas consecuencias físicas propias de esta disciplina (ambas fuera de peligro y recuperándose de las lesiones).

Más allá de las olas surfeadas, la actitud y el compromiso que mostraron en el agua fueron una de las postales más destacadas del día. Por eso, nuestra nota 10 de la jornada es para ellas, que continúan impulsando el surf femenino de olas grandes en Chile.

Finalizada la sesión, la acción continuó en tierra , donde más de 80 participantes del BWRAG continuando con su capacitación de seguridad y rescate.

RCP, control de hemorragias, uso de torniquetes, vendajes de emergencia y protocolos de rescate, fueron parte de un programa intensivo guiado por profesionales de la salud y el rescate de Estados Unidos, Perú y Hawái.

Join .w.r.a.g in Torquay, Australia this April 18–19 for the first Surf Responder & Ocean Safety Summit of 2026, presented by Patagonia Australia . (Additional 2026 summit dates and locations will be released soon.)

This two-day training is designed for surfers and ocean enthusiasts of all backgrounds, skill levels, and abilities. The course teaches essential ocean safety skills with hands-on practical training so you can respond confidently and effectively in emergency situations — for others or yourself.
Participants who successfully complete the training will receive a nationally recognized Statement of Attainment for CPR (HLTAID009) in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, along with an official BWRAG Certificate of Completion.
