Marucci catcher’s mitt finished up.

Catcher’s mitts are certainly the toughest gloves to break in. The padding is thick, the leather is heavy, and the pocket takes real work to develop.

Getting the glove broken in properly from the start can save a lot of frustration and help the player get comfortable with it much faster.

This one is ready for its first game behind the plate.

The Rawlings Rev1X isn’t your typical ball glove.

While the pocket is built with the same premium Heart of the Hide steerhide leather players have trusted for years, the rest of the glove takes a completely different approach. The lightweight molded shell, 3D-printed thumb and pinky stabilizers, and modern construction give it a feel that’s unlike just about anything else on the market.

It’s one of the most innovative gloves Rawlings has ever made, and this one is ready to get back on the field.

This SBX softball catcher’s mitt was the first one I’ve had the chance to work on.

SBX is a softball-specific glove brand, and I was really impressed with the quality. The Japanese kip leather is very nice, and it’s easy to see why these gloves have developed such a strong reputation. High quality glove that I hope to see more of - a great option for anyone in the market for a new softball glove!

There’s nothing better than a player getting a new glove that’s ready to perform from the very first practice.

This brand-new Wilson A2000 1786 came in stiff from the factory and left properly formed, properly broken in, and ready for the field.

🥎⚾️ Is Your Wrist Strap Too Tight??⚾️🥎

A commonly overlooked reason a glove feels hard to close has nothing to do with the leather.

It’s often the wrist strap.

When the wrist strap is adjusted too tightly, your hand can’t move naturally inside the glove. Instead of allowing the glove to close freely around your hand, the tight wrist opening creates resistance. As you squeeze, you’re not just closing the glove—you’re also fighting against the restriction of an overly tight wrist strap, which makes the glove feel stiffer than it really is.

A lot of players (and parents) assume tightening the wrist strap as much as possible will make an oversized glove fit. In reality, it often does the opposite. I grabbed one of my son’s old gloves to demonstrate below. The glove has an adjustable wrist lacing system, making it easy to show the difference. The first half of the video shows a proper fit, the second half shows a wrist strap that is too tight. Same glove, different outcomes.

That’s why choosing the right size glove matters. An oversized glove isn’t “fixed” by cranking down the wrist strap. If the glove is too big for your hand, tightening the wrist opening won’t make it function the way it was designed to. A glove that fits properly will almost always be easier to close, easier to control, and give you better feel on the field.

Sometimes big improvements come from a simple adjustment—or better yet, from making sure you’re using a glove that actually fits your hand.

Some gloves come in for a break in, others come in for surgery.

This left-handed Rico came through the door in pretty rough shape. It had been over-steamed, was bone dry, and it looked more like a tortilla than a baseball glove.

It took a lot of work—and a little convincing—but it came back to life. The shape is restored, the pocket is where it should be, and it’s opening and closing the way it should.

The best part? This glove wasn’t headed to a high school game or an adult league. It was being brought back to life so a dad could play catch with his tee-ball-aged son.

That’s a pretty good reason to save a glove, and made this one a fun project from start to finish.

This Wilson A2000 catcher’s mitt came in needing some help across the finish line. He’d had it for a few months and had been working on it, but it just wasn’t getting to the point where it was ready for the field.

After two days with me, it had the right shape, a deep pocket, and was closing the way a catcher’s mitt should. He had it back in time to use it in his tournament that weekend.

Sometimes a glove doesn’t need months of work—it just needs the right work.

This Wilson A2000 1786 came in for the increasingly rare traditional break-in.

These days, it seems like almost every infield glove is broken in two-in-the-pinky. There’s nothing wrong with that if it matches the player’s preference, but it’s becoming less common to see players who still prefer a traditional break-in with one finger in each stall.

The most important part isn’t following what’s popular—it’s having a glove that matches how you play. A proper break-in should fit the player and their preferences.

Whether you prefer traditional or two-in-the-pinky, I’ll break it in the way that’s best for you.
