BLOG ENERGY BELOW:

There comes a point in every jiu-jitsu practitioner’s journey who trains long enough where their body can’t do the things it used to. They will then be faced with fork in the path. Quit, or Adapt.

Jiu-Jitsu is an art designed so that physical deficits could be overcome by technique. Regularly training for technical proficiency by deliberately limiting your athleticism is how you can stay on the mat for the long haul.

The struggle that most have when doing this is that they don’t like to ā€œloseā€ in training. In order to progress in your technique you will need to limit the strength and speed you use while sparring to achieve your goal, especially when training with a smaller, or less experienced fighter.

Your partner will not always have this same mindset. This will cause you to be caught in submissions or inferior positions that you normally would not permit. Some students feel as though if they allow a newer student to ā€œwinā€ in this way, they aren’t worthy of their rank.

Our culture in Gracie University Training Centers eliminates the need to defend your perceived status or rank in every single roll.

There is a misconception out there that our school, and schools like ours, discourage grappling competition. It’s also been said that we don’t allow sparring at high intensity.

These are completely false. Here is the truth šŸ‘‡

Gracie Jonesboro focuses on Jiu-Jitsu as a fighting system first. As such, we teach fundamentals and habits that are best suited for fighting. Some of these habits and strategies aren’t ideal for the parameters of a grappling competition. As such, we don’t pretend to be the best school for someone wanting to enter an AGF or NAGA tournament. Especially as a beginner.

Our students leave sweat on the mat every day. We roll hard, and ā€œcompetitivelyā€ on a regular basis. Our culture when sparring can be summarized like this, ā€œVictory is never more important than my training partner’s safety.ā€

If you are training jiu-jitsu, there could be a variety of reasons why you are on the mat. These could change over time. You should find a school with a culture that supports your goals.
