Aggression is an umbrella term that encompasses several different forms of aggressive behavior, including territorial, pain-induced, resource guarding, predatory, fear-based, maternal, protective, redirected, idiopathic, frustration-related, and medically influenced aggression.
When handling a dog, it is essential to understand what may trigger or prevent aggressive behavior. Equally important is understanding how to safely manage aggression once it occurs. Unfortunately, the word aggression is often used without a clear understanding of its underlying causes, appropriate solutions, or the management protocols required to keep both people and dogs safe.
The key principle is identify the function and context of the behavior before deciding how to respond. Treating every aggressive dog as though the same technique applies can make the situation worse, particularly when pain, fear, predation, resource guarding, or redirected aggression is involved.💭🐾🐾👣

Justice for Major.
Major was hit by a truck, and a bystander came to his aid. In the midst of severe pain and fear, Major reacted instinctively and bit the bystander.
Pain-induced aggression is a very real and completely understandable response from an injured animal. In an emergency like this, dogs can react reflexively—even when they have never shown aggression before. Careful handling of an injured dog is critical, but the bystander was simply trying to do what they believed was best.

No charges were filed from the bystander.

Yet now, the State of Texas wants Major euthanized.

Major is not just a dog. He is a special dog partnered with a special handler, and his life and service mean everything to the person who depends on him.

His handler is fighting to save Major—and to change the laws that are supposed to protect service animals in situations like this.

This is heartbreaking. Major deserves to be evaluated as an injured service animal who reacted in pain, not condemned because of one traumatic moment.

This is part of management and habit creation. By being consistent and showing the dog what to do, the action becomes automatic.
“Down and relax. There is nothing to react to.”

Give the dog a job, or the dog will create a job.

This also doesn’t take away from physical and mental activities. We want a fulfilled dog, not a frustrated or suppressed dog.

Two different interactions. Yogi and Willow started out well, but Yogi became too much. You can see Willow’s reaction. I stopped Yogi so Willow had time to explore on her own.
Lulu and Yogi play and understand each other’s cues well. We have to supervise their interactions for safety. Letting dogs figure things out on their own can cause stress and, worse, lead to a fight.

With more interactions and experience, Willow and Yogi will start to understand each other better and have more fun together.🐾🐾👣

This is an example of Willow’s training: very short sessions focused on her training, followed by freedom, play, and more.
The goal is to expose her to different situations and ask her to do something that allows her to access something she finds very rewarding. By doing this, we work on different areas of her training.
