Bishop Dullaghan Football Camps

Richard Dullaghan’s extraordinary football journey reflects a lifetime dedicated to excellence, leadership, and the development of young athletes. Born on July 12, 1944, in Washington, D.C., he built the foundation for a remarkable career at Indianapolis Cathedral High School, graduating with the Class of 1962. There, he earned National Honor Society recognition while excelling on the football field as a running back, receiving Second Team All-Indianapolis honors. He continued his playing career at Butler University, where he became one of the Bulldogs' standout performers. Dullaghan was a First Team All-Conference running back in both 1964 and 1965, earned the team's Most Valuable Player award in 1965, received the prestigious Hilton U. Brown Award for Mental Attitude, and served as president of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity during his senior year.

His impact as a coach would become legendary. Across a 38-year coaching career, including 34 years at the high school level, Dullaghan established one of the most successful coaching legacies in Indiana football history. As head coach at Chatard, Carmel, and Ben Davis High Schools, he guided his teams to nine undefeated regular seasons, eight state championships, three additional state finalist appearances, and an Associated Press National Championship. His overall coaching record of 312 victories against just 58 defeats represents an outstanding 84.3 percent winning percentage. Along the way, he also shared his expertise at the collegiate level as wide receivers coach at Purdue University from 1980 to 1982 and as offensive coordinator at the United States Military Academy in 1983 before retiring from teaching and coaching in 2004.

Dullaghan’s influence reached far beyond Friday nights through the creation and growth of the Bishop and Dullaghan Football Camps, Inc. For 37 years, he served as owner and director of what became the nation's largest football skill and technique development camp. What began in 1974 with just 22 campers grew into an operation serving more than 4,000 players annually across eight locations in five states during its peak years while employing 140 coaches each year. Generations of players benefited from his commitment to teaching the fundamentals of the game and developing character through football.

His remarkable accomplishments earned recognition on both the state and national stage. Dullaghan remains the only coach in Indiana history to lead a high school football team to a National Championship and was named National High School Football Coach of the Year in 1991. In 2009, he became the only Indiana high school football coach inducted into the National Federation of High Schools National High School Hall of Fame. His coaching legacy was further celebrated with his induction into the Indiana Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame on May 22, 1997, representing Ben Davis High School in Region 7, and later with his induction into the National Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2021.

Behind every chapter of his remarkable career has been the support of his family. Richard and his wife, Antoinette, have shared in his lifelong passion for football alongside their daughter, Shawn Marie, and son, Jeffrey Michael. Their family has continued to grow with grandchildren Courtney, Lee, Samantha, Christiana, Eddie, and Natalie, providing another source of pride in a life devoted to leadership, mentorship, and service.

Richard Dullaghan’s career stands as one of the defining stories in Indiana football history. As an accomplished player, championship coach, educator, camp director, and Hall of Famer, he has left an enduring legacy built on excellence, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to helping young athletes achieve their fullest potential.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures who have shared their love of football with our camp.
For over 52 years, we’ve had the privilege of coaching young men who are now fathers and even grandfathers bringing their sons and grandsons back through our camp.
We’re also grateful for the many coaches who have raised their own kids around the lessons, discipline, and love of the game.
Football is more than a sport it’s something that gets passed down. And we’re thankful to be a small part of that tradition.

Today, we proudly celebrate Bill Lynch not only for his extraordinary contributions to the game of football, but also on the occasion of his birthday. It is a fitting opportunity to honor a man whose impact on Indiana football has spanned generations and whose legacy continues to inspire players, coaches, and fans across the state.

A standout quarterback at Bishop Chatard High School, Lynch established himself as one of Indiana’s premier players during the early 1970s. He earned three football letters, helped lead the Trojans to an undefeated season in 1971, and was selected All-City for three consecutive years. As a senior, he added All-State honors and was named Indianapolis City Athlete of the Year. By the time he graduated in 1972, he had thrown for 4,257 career yards and 48 touchdowns while earning the Rev. James P. Higgins Award as Bishop Chatard’s top scholar-athlete.

Lynch continued his remarkable career at Butler University, where he became one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in school history. A four-year letterman and team captain, he earned All-Conference honors three times and was named the conference’s Most Valuable Player on three occasions. During the 1975 season, he led the nation in passing percentage and finished his collegiate career having established 15 school and conference records. His achievements were later recognized with induction into the Butler Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

His influence on football extended far beyond his playing days. Beginning as an assistant coach at Butler, Lynch went on to serve at Northern Illinois, Ball State, Indiana University, and DePauw, while also leading both Butler and Indiana as head coach. His teams captured conference championships, appeared in bowl games, and achieved national recognition. Along the way, he earned a reputation as a respected leader and mentor whose impact reached far beyond the scoreboard.

Among his many coaching accomplishments were four conference championships at Butler, a MAC Championship and Las Vegas Bowl appearance at Ball State, and a standout 9-2 season at DePauw. At Indiana University, he guided the Hoosiers to the 2007 Insight Bowl, helping provide one of the program’s most memorable seasons.

Inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2005, Bill Lynch’s story is one of excellence, leadership, and lifelong dedication to the sport. Surrounded by a family with deep football roots—including sons Billy, Joe, and Kevin, who have each pursued coaching careers—his influence continues to be felt throughout the game. As we celebrate his birthday today, we also celebrate a life devoted to football, education, mentorship, and service.
