"Pflash needed me, but I needed him more.
I first learned about Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9s several years ago when someone suggested using one for a case. Everyone was shocked that there was actually a dog trained to sniff out electronics. Seriously, what can’t dogs do?

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to become an ESD K9 handler and was partnered with Pflash, a 3-year-old black Labrador Retriever. Today, we work together at the Pflugerville Police Department as part of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

Pflash is the only ESD K9 in Central Texas. He is trained to locate hidden electronic devices that may contain important evidence in investigations involving child exploitation and other crimes.

Our training was about more than learning to work together. We had to learn to trust one another. Through training and spending time together, we learned how to work as a team, understand what the other needed, and stay focused on the same end goal.

Somewhere along the way, Pflash stopped feeling like the dog I had been assigned and started feeling like my partner.

I went into this opportunity thinking Pflash needed me to guide him through his new life. What I didn’t realize was how much he would become a part of mine." — Detective Janie Campana, Pflugerville Police Department

Pflash is an Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9 with the Pflugerville Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. He and his handler, Detective Janie Campana, help locate hidden electronic evidence in child exploitation investigations and are at NCMEC this week for our Protect. Reduce. Prevent. leadership training. The seminar brings law enforcement leaders together to learn about current issues, emerging trends, and promising practices related to missing and exploited children.

Pflash was funded by the United States Secret Service and trained by Jordan Detection K9 - Electronic Detection K9.

Our Rescue has sponsored and provided 162 Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9s to law enforcement agencies across the U.S., Canada, and around the world. In Pennsylvania alone, eight ESD K9s are working alongside law enforcement.

Meet Mac, Tango, and Doug, three Pennsylvania ESD K9s helping investigators uncover hidden electronic storage devices that may otherwise be missed.

🐾 Mac has located devices containing CSAM evidence during searches in Bucks and Montgomery Counties.

🐾 Tango has been deployed in 17 CSAM-related searches in 2026, locating laptops, hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, and other devices, including phones concealed inside a container of diaper wipes.

🐾 K9 Detective Doug has helped uncover electronic evidence central to several investigations and prosecutions.

These highly specialized K9s don't just find evidence. They're also trained therapy dogs, providing comfort and stability to child victims and investigators working through difficult cases.
