Throwback to the African women’s triple jump record 🇨🇲

On 17 August 2008 in the Beijing Olympics, Francoise Mbango Etone soared to 15.39m in the women’s triple jump, setting an African record and Olympic record on her way to defending her Olympic title.

Her Olympic record stood for 13 years, until Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas leaped 15.67m, breaking Mbango’s mark and setting a new world record in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Mbango’s 15.39m remains the African record to this day.

In 2014, Blessing Okagbare was on top of her game throughout the season. Opening with a 10.98s in Eugene, she was the first to break the 11s barrier that season, and followed it up with 10.92s in New York and a 10.97s in Paris.

At the Commonwealth Games that year, she cruised to a 10.93s finish in the semifinals and later blazed to a 10.85s to win the Commonwealth Games gold medal and shatter the old record, which stood at 10.91s set by Debbie Ferguson in 2002.
