DUFFING YOUR CHIPS?

The problem usually isn’t that you looked up—it’s that the club reached the bottom of its swing behind the ball.

Phil Mickelson’s basic chipping technique offers a simple solution:

1️⃣ WEIGHT FORWARD
Keep 70–80% of your pressure on the lead foot. This moves the low point of the swing forward and helps you strike the ball before the turf.
For basic chip ball more off back foot, for higher shot move ball off front foot.

2️⃣ HINGE AND HOLD
Create a small wrist hinge going back, rotate your chest through and maintain a firm lead wrist. Don’t let the clubhead flip past your hands.

The key is to keep moving through the shot. “Hold” doesn’t mean stopping your body—it means controlling the clubface and preventing the hands from trying to scoop the ball into the air.

✅ Weight forward
✅ Hinge going back
✅ Chest turns through
✅ Lead wrist stays firm
✅ Controlled finish

Trust the loft of the club to get the ball into the air.

Fundamentals first. Better contact. Lower scores.

WE ALL NEED SWING THOUGHTS—BUT ARE WE THINKING THE RIGHT ONES?

Good golf does not mean having an empty mind. It means organizing your thoughts into a repeatable routine.

Before the swing, you can check your fundamentals:

✅ Grip
✅ Ball position
✅ Posture
✅ Alignment
✅ Distance from the ball

These are setup checkpoints—not five different thoughts you should carry into the swing.

Once your setup is complete, shift your attention to ONE key swing thought or feel:

🎯 Smooth tempo
🎯 Stay in posture
🎯 Hold the finish

Your routine should separate preparation from ex*****on:

1. Choose the shot and target.
2. Check your grip and setup.
3. Make one rehearsal using your key feel.
4. Step in and complete your setup.
5. Trust ONE swing thought and go.

The goal isn’t to eliminate thinking. The goal is to do your thinking at the right time.

Build your fundamentals into the routine. Then simplify your mind and trust one key thought during the swing.

What is the ONE swing thought that helps you play your best golf?

HE WANTS MORE DISTANCE.

THIS IS WHERE I’D START.

Most golfers think they need to swing harder.

I think we need to find out why they’re losing speed first.

1️⃣ GRIP
A poor grip can limit your ability to control the clubface and release the club efficiently.

2️⃣ SETUP
Poor posture, ball position or alignment can put your body in a position where it can’t move efficiently.

3️⃣ MOBILITY & FLEXIBILITY
Can you physically make the turn, create separation and move through impact?
If your body can’t get into the positions the swing requires, you’re going to compensate somewhere.

4️⃣ SEQUENCE
Poor sequencing can cause the arms and club to take over too early—leaving a lot of potential speed on the table.

5️⃣ MAINTAIN THE ANGLE
If you lose the proper wrist/club relationship too early in the downswing, you’re giving away speed before the club ever reaches the ball.

6️⃣ THEN ADD SPEED
Once the fundamentals, mobility and sequence are working, then we can train for more speed.

DON’T JUST TRY TO SWING HARDER.

FIND OUT WHERE YOU’RE LOSING SPEED.

More distance often starts with fixing the things that are preventing you from creating and delivering speed efficiently.

How to Stay Focused for All 18 Holes…

Here’s the truth…

PGA Tour players DON’T stay focused for all 18 holes.

Research from sports psychologists shows Tour players are intensely focused for only 30-60 seconds per shot—about 20-30 minutes during an entire 4½-hour round.

The rest of the time, they intentionally relax.

✅ They chat with their caddie.
✅ They enjoy the walk.
✅ They slow their breathing.
✅ They clear their mind.

Then, when it’s time to hit…

🎯 Pick the target.
🎯 Commit.
🎯 Execute.

After the shot, they switch off again.

The biggest mistake I see amateurs make is trying to stay “locked in” for four hours. By the back nine, they’re mentally exhausted.

Instead, think like a Tour player:

Relax between shots. Focus only when it’s your turn to play.

You don’t need four hours of concentration.

You only need 30 seconds of complete commitment, one shot at a time.

Play smarter. Stay fresh. Score better.

The Range Isn’t for Swing Changes. It’s for Finding Your Ball Flight.

Too many golfers step onto the range before a round trying to rebuild their swing. That’s the fastest way to lose confidence before you even reach the first tee.

Your warm-up has one purpose:
Prepare to play, not to practice.

Use your time to:

* Get your body moving.
* Find your tempo and rhythm.
* See your natural ball flight.
* Build confidence with the swing you brought that day.

Save the swing changes for the practice tee. Before a round, trust your preparation and focus on playing golf—not fixing your golf swing.

The best rounds often begin with acceptance, not perfection.

Pressure doesn’t create your golf swing—it reveals it.

When the pressure is on, your mind gets noisy.

You start thinking about your grip.
Your takeaway.
Your backswing.
Your transition.
Your finish.

That’s too much.

The best players simplify.

Verbalize one simple swing thought before every shot. Say it out loud or quietly to yourself. One clear intention gives your brain a single target instead of ten competing thoughts.

For me, great golf isn’t about having more swing thoughts—it’s about having the right one.

Practice with purpose. Train your mind the same way you train your swing.

What is your one swing thought when it matters most?

Technically sufficient. Mentally insufficient. That’s a combination that keeps golfers stuck.

Most golfers spend hours chasing swing positions, launch monitor numbers, and the latest training aids. But when it’s time to play, doubt creeps in. They overthink. They lose commitment. They let one bad shot turn into three.

The truth is, your mind can only trust what your fundamentals consistently produce.

At Ingy School of Golf, we don’t just help you build a better golf swing—we help you build confidence through solid fundamentals, smarter practice, and a repeatable process you can trust under pressure.

Sometimes the smartest shot isn’t the heroic one.

When you’re in trouble, your goal shouldn’t be to save par at all costs—it should be to avoid the double bogey or worse.

The best players in the world understand this. They take their medicine, chip back to safety, make bogey, and move on.

A double bogey costs two shots instead of one, and that’s incredibly difficult to recover from. One bad decision often turns one dropped shot into two… or even three.

PGA Tour players separate themselves by avoiding big numbers, not by pulling off miracle recoveries. In 2026, the Tour average is making bogey or worse on only 16.3% of holes, and the best players are closer to 10%. Their discipline keeps doubles and triples off the card.

Remember:
✅ Take your medicine.
✅ Get the ball back in play.
✅ Make bogey if you have to.
✅ Live to fight the next hole.

A bogey won’t ruin your round. A double bogey often can.
