Dear Friend,

Are you a parent who has lost a child to drowning? Or, are you a Swim Instructor?

Today, we have an opportunity to help prevent other families from experiencing the heartbreak of losing their children.

The Swimming & Aquatics Ed/Drowning Research-Injury Prevention Policy Institute, in partnership with the Judah Brown Project and the World Open Water Swimming Association, is asking the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to take a closer look at wearable flotation devices such as puddle jumpers, arm floaties, swim rings, swim vests, and other products that many families believe make children safer in the water.

Research suggests these products may create a false sense of security, reduce close supervision, and interfere with the development of true water safety skills.

The CPSC is listening.

On June 30, Acting CPSC Chairman Peter Feldman acknowledged that we must do better to protect children from drowning. Now we have an opportunity to make sure the voices of families are part of that conversation.

Here's How You Can Help:

1. Share Your Story

If your child was wearing or had experience with a wearable flotation device, or if you have thoughts about these products, we invite you to complete the attached survey.
Your experience may help shape future policies and improve child safety.

2. Sign the Petition

Together, we are asking the Consumer Product Safety Commission to strengthen oversight of wearable flotation devices and improve the information available to parents.
Every signature helps demonstrate that families want meaningful action.

3. Join Our National Roundtable
July 24, 2026
11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Eastern on Zoom

The day before World Drowning Prevention Day, families, researchers, instructors, and advocates from across the country will come together to discuss ways we can better protect children.

Whether you choose to simply listen or share your story, your voice is welcome.

Why Your Voice Matters:

Your child's story cannot be changed.
But it can help protect another child.
That is a legacy no parent ever wanted to create—but one that has the power to save lives.

21 seconds!

(PLEASE KNOW THIS CHILD SURVIVED)

14 seconds.

That's how long this child was in the water before anyone realized what had happened.

This image is a powerful reminder of how quickly and silently drowning can occur.

1- The children were supposed to be out of the pool.
2- One adult was actually in the pool.
3- One adult was tending to another child.
4- One adult was sitting just feet away.
YET NO ONE HEARD THE CHILD ENTER THE WATER!

Notice the flotation device left on the deck. Many children who regularly wear flotation devices have not yet developed the skills to save themselves if they enter the water without one.

Thankfully, this child survived. Tragically, many others do not.

We are not posting this to shame anyone. It's about understanding that drowning doesn't look or sound the way most people expect. It is often silent, and it can happen in seconds—even when adults are nearby.

That's why we stress layers of protection: self-rescue swim lessons, barriers, active adult supervision when children are in or near the water, and never relying on flotation devices.

It only takes as little as 21 seconds to lose a child to a drowning. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD BECOME A STATISTIC.

This photo absolutely made my holiday weekend! 💙🏊

A proud parent sent me this picture of their swimmer practicing her skills over the holiday weekend, and I couldn't be more proud.
When she first started lessons with me, she was very hesitant around the water. Seeing her now, confidently practicing everything she's learned in all types of water is such an incredible milestone. 🥹Even water slides can be fun when you have the skills and confidence to enjoy them safely! 💦🎢

Moments like this remind us all that swimming is about building confidence, developing lifelong water safety skills, and giving children the freedom to enjoy the water with confidence.

I am so proud of how far she has come, and I'm incredibly grateful to her family for sharing this special moment with me. Keep having fun and making memories—you've earned it! 💙👏

Sending prayers for these families. Judah Brown Project is wonderful about getting families sponsored for lessons. We are so grateful for their partnership in keeping kids safe

This 4th of July weekend, Harris County (Houston area) saw 3 child drownings.

A five-year-old was in a pool full of people and drowned anyway. His mom and Aunt were on the other side of the pool when someone found him, unresponsive in the water. He later died.

An 8-year-old was found in a pool and is currently at the hospital. No further details are known at this time.

A 2-year-old and a 72-year-old were both found in a small pond with a walking path around it, in a neighborhood in Cypress. It’s the type of pond that is commonly found in neighborhoods across the city of Houston. Both died.

Friends, July sees more drownings every year in the USA than any other month.

These stories are the same ones that happen over and over again.

Yes, a child can drown in a crowded pool with lots of people around. When the pool is busy, all of the noise and activity hijacks attention away from a person who is drowning, because drownings are quiet and quick. Our brains are wired to give the most attention to the loudest, brightest, and fastest-moving things. Drowning is none of those things. Because of this, they are easy to miss. We just don't see them.

This is why you need to be close enough to your child at all times in and around water that you could reach your arm out and grab them if you needed to. This is why your child needs to know how to float on their back and wait for help. This is why you don’t rely on a lifeguard or friends or family to know where your child is. It is far too common that when everyone is supposed to be watching, no one is actually watching because everyone assumes someone else is doing it.

And yes, kids can drown in those ponds that back up to your backyard. If they do, it is even more dangerous than a pool, as you cannot see someone as clearly in natural water as you can in a pool.

This is why barriers are a must. Fences, locks, and alarms all help prevent a child from getting to that water. This is again why your child needs to know how to float on their back and wait for help if they do get into the water alone.

Drowning is fast, silent, and common, and we in the USA are in the worst month for it all year. If you haven’t been thinking about water safety before, you NEED to NOW!
