In eight years of scouting I watched thousands of athletes.

And every once in a while one of them would walk onto that field and something would shift.

You could feel it. Not just see it. Feel it.

That vibration — that feeling you got just watching them warm up — was the physical expression of something happening inside. Their inner belief. Their identity. Their self talk. Exuding through every single thing they did.

The way they walked to the plate. The way they carried themselves between pitches. The way they responded after a strikeout.

Their body language was telling me everything I needed to know before they ever swung a bat or threw a pitch.

And here’s what most athletes don’t understand — that vibration is not a talent. It’s a decision. It’s the result of what you’re telling yourself on the inside showing up on the outside.

Most athletes have never been taught how to build that inner belief consistently. That’s exactly what I teach in the Mental Edge Blueprint.

The worst thing you can do at a showcase this summer is try to impress the coaches watching you.

I know that sounds backwards.

But I had numerous scouts at my games in high school — and the decision I made changed everything.

I was the 10th overall pick in the 1995 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. 13 years of professional baseball. 3 years in the Major Leagues. 8 years scouting for the Angels. And now I coach the mental game for high school and college athletes through my Mental Edge Blueprint program.

I wasn’t there to prove anything to those scouts. I was there to prove it to myself. I showed up for my teammates. I locked in on my at bats. I focused on what I could control. And all those scouts became noise.

The result of that internal focus — tenth overall pick in the entire country.

You might not have numerous scouts at your game this summer. But you have college coaches watching. Evaluators in the stands. People making decisions about your future.

I spent 8 years as a pro scout.

And I’m going to tell you something no scout will say publicly about character and the draft.

When the talent is elite enough, organizations will find a way to live with the character concerns.

That is just the truth.

Owners pay for production. Coaches and managers live with the personality every single day.

And that is where the real cost shows up. Not on the stat sheet. In the locker room.

The habits that show up at the highest level didn’t appear overnight.

They were built over years.

Talent might get you there. Character determines how long you last.

I want to tell you what I wish someone had told me before my first at bat in the big leagues.

Standing in the on deck circle, everything I had worked for my whole life about to happen, and instead of feeling ready, one question on a loop.

Do I actually belong here.

I thought once I made it, the doubt would disappear. It didn’t. It just showed up in a nicer uniform.

That feeling is not information. It’s just a thought, and you don’t have to believe everything you think.

The difference between players who let that thought run the show and the ones who don’t isn’t talent. It’s something you can learn.

I wish someone had taught me that before my first at bat in the big leagues instead of years into my career.
