The tolerance zone is a critical buffer for safe digging. Excavators are required to maintain a minimum clearance from the approximate locate. This minimum distance is referred to as the tolerance zone which is defined as not more than 24 inches from the outside dimensions of the underground utility

This practice helps prevent damage and ensures safety.

In Kansas, locate requests must be submitted at least 2 full working days before digging but no more than 5 working days in advance.

This window helps ensure utility lines are properly marked and still visible when your project begins.

Additionally, every contractor must have their own locate request.
