That bargain "925 sterling silver" ring online might literally be poison.
A recent lab investigation by the Birmingham Assay Office tested cheap jewelry sold on major platforms like Amazon and TikTok Shop. The results are terrifying:
* The "Silver" Ring: Listed as 92.5% pure silver, it was actually 92.3% cadmium - over 9,000 times the legal safety limit.
* The TikTok Charms: Tested at 33% cadmium - nearly 3,300 times the permitted threshold.
Cadmium is a highly toxic, cancer-causing heavy metal. It doesn’t just wash out of your system; it accumulates over time, causing severe damage to your kidneys, bones, and respiratory system. While brief contact with unbroken skin is low risk, daily wear, pierced ears, broken skin, or a toddler chewing on a charm is a massive health hazard.
Both platforms took the listings down after the investigation, but thousands were already sold.
The takeaway: Online marketplaces do not lab-test third-party items before they ship to your front door. If jewelry is suspiciously cheap, from an unverified seller, and ships from an obscure manufacturer, do not put it on your body.
