Eventual healing is not about forgetting, minimizing, or erasing pain, but about expanding our lives and hearts to accommodate it alongside new moments of joy. It's not about getting OUT of feeling grief, but how can you support yourself while you are IN it.
āGrief is predicated on our capacity to give and receive love... If we allow ourselves the grace that comes with love, however, we must allow ourselves the grace that is required to mourn.ā (A Wolfelt)

This is how it feels to grieveā¦
Itās not how you would normally picture it.
Itās rarely an uncontrollable sob.
Itās seldom visible on the outside.
Itās a course through your veins kind of throb.
Itās a faraway stare off in space.
Itās forgetting what you were doing.
Itās a blank expressionless face.
Itās a new lens to a world left in ruin.
Itās an energy you canāt seem to muster.
Itās a fatigue you canāt seem to shake.
Itās pinching yourself out of a nightmare,
that you realize is no dream when you wake.
Itās going through all the motions,
of the ordinary everyday jobs.
Itās learning how to perfect a smile,
while simultaneously choking back sobs.
Itās seeing a glass left half empty,
while showing the world itās half full.
Itās losing your desire for connecting,
but giving in with a push or a pull.
Itās plans you make and then cancel,
because hobbies now feel like a chore.
Itās relationships continually tested,
because youāre not who you were once before.
Itās a silence that screams and then deafens.
Itās a stillness to the core of your soul.
Itās a heaviness that can never be lifted.
Itās a getting through the day is your goal.
Itās a constant treading of water,
and you canāt fight your way back to shore.
And thatās just the tip of the iceberg,
because grief⦠it encompasses more.
Itās a constant shape-shift of emotions.
Itās panic, itās numbing, itās guilt.
Itās the ripping out of a foundation,
that took your whole life to be built.
Itās learning that life keeps on going.
It resumes to its usual pace.
And youāre left searching for the pieces,
of the you from another time, another place.
And even if you find all the pieces,
theyāre weathered, theyāve taken a toll.
That even when you put them together,
their sum will not make you a whole.
Itās coming to grips with whatās broken.
Itās reminding yourself to still breathe.
Itās accepting the reliving of trauma.
Thisā¦
is what it feels likeā¦
to grieve.
