My interest and emphasis on AI applications for pets, especially rescued pets, has consistently been on:
1. Helping rescues and shelters save more lives.
2. Helping veterinarians, insurance companies, lawyers, and policymakers make better decisions.
3. Helping behavior and training professionals make better science-based interpretations that lead to more humane and effective outcomes.
4. Helping organizations preserve expertise while reducing reasoning errors.
5. Supporting accountable human judgment.
6. Reducing unnecessary reasoning friction while preserving expertise.
7. Making reasoning transparent and auditable.
It's never been about firing people. Instead, the focus is:
“We're helping professionals do difficult work better."
That distinction matters.
The amount of information, evidence, and expertise that must be coordinated for a single animal has grown beyond what any one person can easily manage. AI gives us an opportunity to bring those pieces together responsibly—not to replace professionals, but to support them in making better-informed, more consistent, and more accountable decisions for each individual pet.
To me, this is the next ethical step toward truly “emptying the shelters”, not by continually building larger shelters or relying on euthanasia, but by helping organizations preserve knowledge, improve coordination, and intervene earlier and more effectively.
My goal is simple:
Preserve lives,
Preserve organizational wisdom,
Reduce unnecessary cognitive burden,
Improve accountable decision-making.
