One of the greatest things we can teach young people is how to fail without believing they ARE a failure.
When I worked with the Irvine Valley College Women’s Flag Football team, we talked about failure as a stepping stone — not a setback.
Because mistakes are coming.
Losses are coming.
Goals we work incredibly hard for may still not happen.
We can’t build confidence by trying to protect athletes and students from those moments. We build it by giving them the tools to move THROUGH them.
Learn from it. Adjust. Keep going.
The goal isn’t to become someone who never fails.
It’s to become someone who trusts themselves enough to keep going when they do.
That’s resilience. And that’s confidence we can carry far beyond the field.
I loved having this conversation with these athletes at Irvine Valley College.
