Winning once is hard.

Staying hungry after you’ve already reached the top?

That takes a different standard. 🏆

After winning the National Championship at Michigan State, Jeff Lerg knew the following season would be different.

Everyone would have them circled on the calendar.
Expectations would be higher.

And repeating that success would require more than motivation—it would require being surrounded by people who expected more from themselves every single day.

There’s a reason high achievers gravitate toward other high achievers.

Your environment influences your habits.

Your habits influence your standards.

And your standards determine how you respond when success, pressure, and expectations increase.

Your first team practice isn’t just another skate. It’s an evaluation. 👀

When the season starts, more isn’t always better.

If you’ve already done a skill skate, a lesson, and another workout before stepping onto the ice with your team, you might be showing up exhausted for the moment that actually matters.

Your coach is watching.
Your teammates are watching.
And those early practices can shape the first impression you make.

There’s a time to train.
There’s a time to prepare.
And then there’s a time to perform.

When the season begins, athletes have to understand the difference between doing more and doing the right things with intention.

🎙️ Episode 84: High-Level Sports Are Ruthless. Are You Ready?

Jeff Lerg, Chris Palmer, and Natalie Ferenc break down what athletes need to understand when a new season begins—and why being prepared to execute matters more than simply piling on extra work.

3 WAYS TO MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION 👀🏒

Whether you’re joining a new team, heading to a tryout, attending camp, or stepping into any new hockey environment, first impressions matter.

1️⃣ Look the part.
Show up dressed appropriately and presentable. No backwards hats. No obscene language or graphics on your apparel. Your warm-up gear should reflect the same level of respect. Looking the part is half the battle.

2️⃣ Show respect.
Greet coaches and teammates properly. Look coaches in the eye. Shake their hands. Be confident, mature, and respectful. Even when you’re competing against others, never act like you’re above anyone. Stay focused on your own performance, but remember to be a great teammate.

3️⃣ Compete.
Once you step on the ice, the only word that matters is compete.

Compete in skating drills.
Compete in shooting drills.
Compete in the scrimmage.
Compete on the first shot.
Compete on every rebound.
Compete until the very last second of the skate.

Coaches notice the players who carry themselves the right way — on and off the ice.
