This is the American Power Boat Association 20SSH (Super Stock Hydro) outboard racing class 🏁

Competition uses a 10ft hydroplane and is powered by a Yamato 2 stroke factory race outboard. These motors are stock in this class, no mods of any kind allowed. You just put the racing prop of your choice on and go!

The APBA has rules that must be followed. A free rule book and technical rule book is available on their website.

This type of outboard racers are called kneelers, because the driver is on their knees. Left hand on the throttle, it’s a special throttle for safety. If you let go the engine dies. No neutral, no reverse, just go.

These boats only turn left at speed. The turn fin making the spray on the left will make the boat roll if you try and turn right. If you want to go right, you make 3 lefts 😂

The class can reach 65+ mph in competition. Regional and National points accumulated at local and Championship races.

Win the National Championship and you are 1 US 🥇🏁

Mod Time 🪚

This Modified Outboard’s cockpit sides are just too tall for me, this is a drivers preference.

I am just giving it a trim, started at 1.5” on the stern and made my way forward. I would say it’s normal kneeler height now.

Saved 3lbs but that wasn’t the reason I did it. Working on the new paint scheme. Once I’ve tested everything out and know I am not cutting or changing anything else I can start painting.

Won’t be pretty by Lake Ming but it will be racing 🏁

I don’t know what I am going to do with them, but it is appreciated. I could make 2 more race motors, restore one for the Sid craft when it doesn’t run the Looper? Use them for parts?

What should I do?

Any donations and support to our team is always appreciated. Racing is a hobby, we don’t get paid to do this. All help big or small keeps the team moving forward and more content 😎🏁

The Yamato race engine classes

This is my Yamato 302. These are factory 2 stroke race motors built for Japanese Stadium racing. Imported to the US, Australia, Europe, and all over for racing also. This motor can race in 3 different stock classes, a Mod class, and a Pro class.

These motors are reliable and run WOT all day long

What can a stock OMC 15hp really do?

A lot of people underestimate the OMC 15hp.

This one is stock, on a carbon/wood hull we built from the ground up and it just clocked 55+ mph in competition.

🏁 Race season isn’t slowing down. I’ve got two California weekends coming up, and I want to get the word out—especially for our Northern California Outboard Association family. (American Power Boat Racing ~ Region Nine)

Oct 3–4 — Lake Ming, Bakersfield (SCSC Divisional Championship)
Fast water, big classes, and championship points on the line.
(SCSC - Jr. Hydroplane & Sportsman Limited Stock Outboard Classes)

Oct 31–Nov 1 — Lake Minden, Nicolaus (NCOA)
This is the one I’m pushing hard. NCOA is growing outboard racing in Northern California, and this fall race is a perfect chance to support the club, bring new people into the sport, and enjoy a full weekend of competitive heats. Mark your calendar and come out to Lake Minden.

Mercury mod race boat. These little hydroplanes use a Mercury 4 cylinder 2 stroke motor that has been heavily modified, runs on race fuel, and has a racing direct drive lower unit. Special props designed for high speed and turning.

This is just the milling session before the camera looks at the sky. I really need to do better at tightening that.

So what is milling? These boats race on a clock start. That means a 3 minute announcement is given. Boats start and get out onto the course. They mill around (like a formation lap) using up the time and practicing the timing of the start.

The goal of this milling session is to place yourself at the right place at the right time. When the 3 minutes is over the race officially starts. Unlike F1 or NASCAR we don’t qualify for start positions.

Instead we must compete with the other drivers for lane choice. Lanes 1 - 12. Since this is an oval or triangle course and your always turning left, lane 1 is the shortest distance around the course.

Timing is everything. Full throttle, top speed, as fast as you can go, in the lane you want, a fraction of an inch behind the start line when the clock hits 0 🏁

Now that’s commitment 😂

Two drivers, one last lap, everything on the line.

This onboard video shows new Lynx Racing driver Pam Wilde taking the Yamato 300 SSH class for a test drive.

Battling for the lead against the fast rookie Lizzy Erlandson. Every turn, every ripple, and every throttle squeeze matters.

Very happy with her results for the first time in the boat 🚀

Take a ride in a Merc 2 stroke racing hydroplane. This is D Mod Hydro. The class uses a 44 cubic inch 4 hole 2 stroke that has been highly modified and equipped with a racing lower unit.

The hydroplane is 11ft long and class speed is 80-90mph in the course and up to 100mph in the straightaway.

Unfortunately I need to find a better camera mount because after just a lap well you will see the sun ☀️ 😂🤪

Mercury 2 stroke modified race motor. This motor started out as a fishing motor from the late 50’s. In the right hands they can be turned into an entirely different animal. There are modern motors that can make more power but for the class I race in with the American Power Boat Association this is what’s legal and what I choose to use. Plus nothing sounds like a screaming Merc 🚀
