Many things can affect balance, especially as we age. Balance isn’t just about having “strong legs”—it depends on several body systems working together.

Things That Can Affect Balance
• Muscle weakness — especially the legs, hips, glutes, core, and ankles.
• Vision changes — poor vision, cataracts, incorrect prescriptions, or difficulty seeing in low light.
• Inner-ear/vestibular problems — your inner ear helps your brain determine where your body is in space.
• Medications — some blood-pressure medicines, sleep aids, anxiety medications, pain medicines, and others can cause dizziness or lightheadedness.
• Dehydration — can contribute to low blood pressure, dizziness, weakness, and confusion.
• Blood-pressure changes — particularly a sudden drop when going from sitting or lying down to standing.
• Blood-sugar fluctuations — very low or high blood sugar can affect steadiness and alertness.
• Poor sensation in the feet — neuropathy or reduced sensation makes it harder to feel the floor and adjust your position.
• Joint problems or pain — problems with the feet, ankles, knees, hips, or back can change the way someone walks.
• Reduced flexibility and mobility — particularly limited ankle and hip mobility.
• Poor posture — changes the body’s center of gravity and can make recovering from a loss of balance harder.
• Slower reaction time — the ability to quickly step, grab something, or reposition the body matters.
• Fatigue and poor sleep — both can affect concentration, coordination, and reaction time.
• Cognitive changes — attention, judgment, spatial awareness, and the ability to process the environment all contribute to safe movement.
• Fear of falling — people may become stiff, take shorter steps, or move less, which can actually contribute to further weakness.
• Footwear — loose shoes, slippery soles, high heels, or poorly fitting shoes.
• Environment — rugs, clutter, poor lighting, uneven surfaces, stairs, wet floors, and even unfamiliar surroundings.

Sarcopenia is not just "getting older."
It's the gradual loss of muscle mass, strength, and function that can make everyday life harder over time.
Starting at age 30, if you don't continue with resistance training you will lose 3-8% of lean muscle mass every 10 years, which will equate to a lose of independence and function into your 70s.

For parents, this matters even more.
