Durham Beyond Policing

is a grassroots formation to divest from policing and prisons and reinvest our local budgets into community safety, wellness and care.

: A call to action put forth by Southerners on New Ground (NC), and the Durham chapter of the Black Youth Project 100

We as members of the Durham community fully oppose the multi-million dollar expansion of policing and criminalization in our neighborhoods. We want the city of Durham to divest from police and prisons and instead fund black futures and invest in black and brown community needs. We want living wage jobs, not cops; funding for public education, not cops; access to mental health services, not cops; sustainable food and water sources, not cops; affordable housing, not cops; free public transportation, not cops; free childcare, not cops. We want a Durham where the police no longer get more support than residents and we exercise a democracy that allows us to dictate where our money is spent. ICE, police, checkpoints out of our neighborhoods!

Join us for our next event, Wellness Wednesday, on Weds. Sept.16th from 6-8pm at North Star Church of the Arts (220 W Geer St, Durham, NC 27701). We will are continuing our monthly space to build community & be in wellness practices together, will you join us?

Please note that this specific event is centering those that are Black, Indigenous & people of color.

If you cannot attend but want to participate or potentially host a future wellness event - DM us so we can learn how to get you plugged in!

The next Community Design event is our workshop about Abolition on Saturday, August 15th from 2-5pm at North Star Church of the Arts (220 W Geer St, Durham, NC 27701) - will you join us?

We believe in abolishing policing & creating a world that transforms life instead of taking it away. In this session we will discuss what abolition is & how we can practice it in our lives. This event is open to people of all identities.

Thank you to those that attended our Community Design event last month & shared what is needed to create more options for safety by and for our communities ✊🏽✨

We will be hosting our next event, Wellness Wednesday, on Weds. July 29th from 6-8pm at North Star Church of the Arts (220 W Geer St, Durham, NC 27701) - will you join us?

We will set group expectations, review our curriculum & identifying buddies for the workshop ahead of us. Please note that this specific event is centering those that are Black, Indigenous & people of color.

Our following space we be a training on Sat. - August 15th between 2-5pm (location tba). All of our Saturday trainings will be open to everyone interested in violence prevention, intervention, restoration & transformation.

✊🏽 Join us to build more options for safety that is led by & for our communities on Weds, June 17th from 5-8pm at NorthStar church (220 W Geer St, Durham, NC)!

The East Durham Community Design Project is kicking off our wellness spaces & continuing to train up our folks to tend to violence in our communities. We know that our people have been resourceful in finding ways to keep one another safe beyond police. Our wellness & training offering are to help grow our ability to collectively prevent, intervene, restore & transform our neighborhoods.

📣 Tell the Durham City Council NO to expanding surveillance in our city, NO to wasting taxpayer dollars!

📍 The next council meeting is this Monday, June 1st - 7pm at 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham, NC. We need community members showing up to let the council know that continuing to pour millions into surveillance is unacceptable. Please give public comment. You can signup in advance at tinyurl.com/durham-public-comment or arrive at 6:30pm to sign-up in-person. If you cannot speak please email your comments beforehand.

💵 Budgets are moral documents, continuing to invest more into policing instead of the people that make this city function is a shame. Our money should be prioritizing paying workers a livable wage, invest more into housing & other gaps our people desperately need support navigating.

❌ NO to more policing & ✅ YES to our people!

🧠 Weds., April 15th from 5:30-7:30pm at NorthStar | Wellness Wednesday - discuss what’s happening in our community and vision what wellness spaces can look like

Let’s grow our relationships with one another and build our skills for the sake of more safety in our communities! All ages welcome. Food and masks provided.
