Today marks the “beginning of our country,” and the day we became “free”...IF you’re a white man/woman who owns land. Today, here at NWW, we are celebrating our RESILIENCE, our RESISTANCE, and our INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE. We aren’t celebrating the day our nation won its freedom. For our Black family and us, OUR land and OUR people became “Merciless Indian Savages” and Slaves. We became a property to sell, treaties to be violated, land and women to rape.
To us, it represents 250 years of colonization—but more importantly, 250 years of resilience.
This year, our stance is very clear: we have a responsibility to FIGHT and PROTECT our lands and waters. We are the land and water protectors.
Here’s how you can help and stand with us. Your “rent check” (donation) will go towards sending a delegation of Native women to Washington, DC, to ensure our ancestral knowledge and land rights are at the forefront of national policy conversations.
Decisions regarding wilderness boundaries, public lands, and conservation directly impact Indigenous communities. By sending indigenous advocates to Washington, D.C., our delegation will:
• Engage in Congressional Meetings: Speak directly with Members of Congress about public land issues, systemic land rights, and the preservation of sacred spaces.
• Champion Co-Stewardship: Actively participate in the National Wilderness Coalition Indigenous Committee’s Capitol events focused on Tribal co-management of federal lands.
• Shape the Narrative: Ensuring the history of conservation acknowledges Indigenous stewardship.
• Build Movement Capacity: Gain critical policy and advocacy tools to bring back to local grassroots outdoor initiatives.
As Land and Water protectors, we are ensuring OUR FUTURE AND PEOPLE have access to the land and water for ceremonial purposes, livelihood, play, and a viable future for the next generation.
