Remember how about a week ago we said it’s been a long night?

Well… this time it’s been a long three days… and counting. 🫠

On Tuesday, we welcomed several new faces to the CPR family. Four puppies caught our attention almost immediately. Something just didn’t seem right. We hoped they were simply getting over the tail end of a bug. Every puppy must receive a health certificate before traveling to us, and the paperwork we received showed they had passed their exams with flying colors.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

Less than 24 hours later, two of the puppies were vomiting nonstop, lethargic, and struggling to breathe. We rushed them to the emergency hospital, where they were diagnosed with severe bronchopneumonia and immediately placed in oxygen chambers. Two days later, they’re still there.

The following morning, the other two siblings began showing the same symptoms. They were rushed to the ER as well and received the same diagnosis. Because the first hospital only has two oxygen chambers, they had to be transferred to another emergency hospital for treatment.

In the last three days, we’ve hospitalized four puppies, our staff has spent more hours at emergency hospitals than at home, and the medical bills continue to grow.

Here’s where everyone is going into tonight:

Bullet
Hospitalized Wednesday evening. Today was a tough day. His white blood cell count was already around 47,000 when he arrived, and despite treatment, it’s climbed to roughly 51,000. His team switched him to a more aggressive treatment plan today, and we’re hoping he finally starts turning the corner. Tonight is his third night in the hospital, and he’s still dependent on oxygen.

Grant
Hospitalized Wednesday evening. Grant is stable and showing small improvements each day. His white blood cell count is coming down, and he’s slowly beginning to tolerate lower oxygen levels, but he’s not ready to come off oxygen completely or go home. He’s also heading into his third night of hospitalization.

Delta
Hospitalized Thursday morning. She declined overnight but is currently stable in her oxygen chamber. She’s still far too weak to begin weaning from oxygen, so we’re hoping tomorrow brings better news. She’s staying at least one more night in the hospital.

General
Hospitalized Thursday morning. Friday morning’s update wasn’t encouraging, but just a few hours later everything changed. He responded incredibly well to treatment, successfully came off oxygen, and his medical team felt comfortable sending him home to continue recovering. We think he may have become sick later than his siblings, allowing us to catch it just a little earlier. 🤞

We never enjoy making posts like this, but we also believe in being transparent about what rescue sometimes looks like.

Each puppy’s first night in the ICU was approximately $4,000, and every additional night they’re hospitalized is expected to cost another $2,500–3,000 per puppy. By tomorrow morning, we’ll have spent well over $20,000 trying to save these four little lives, and three of them are still fighting.

This is exactly why adoption fees and donations exist. They allow us to say “yes” when puppies need lifesaving care instead of having to wonder whether we can afford it.

It was the old ladies’ turn to hike (Timber and Stormy) but Dusty insisted on joining us. 😁 Even though it was hot outside, we enjoyed a leisurely hike through pretty wildflowers and butterflies. Timber (age 12, our oldest dog) was so excited when we arrived at the trailhead that she jumped into the front seat! She hasn’t done that for a while and it was nice to see her so spunky! 😍

I was running my robot vacuum and looked up to find River and Dusty snuggling together as safety buddies. 🤭💕

Denver passed a law banning the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits in stores. 🐾

The goal is to encourage shelter adoptions and help more animals find homes.

Supporters believe the policy can reduce demand for mass breeding operations.

Animal welfare advocates say shelters provide many loving pets needing families.

The decision reflects growing efforts to prioritize rescue animals and responsible adoption.

This week, six young survivors were welcomed into the JOY Mukti Home in Nepal.

Six girls now have a safe bed, loving care, and a place to begin healing.

For children who are waiting for rescue, an open bed can be the difference between continued exploitation and the first step toward freedom.

Because of your support, JOY has been able to expand into a larger rental home and welcome more girls who need safety, care, and restoration.

And now, we are dreaming toward something even bigger: a permanent home in Nepal where more children can find refuge, healing, and hope.

I’ve been so busy with fire mitigation and home improvement projects that I haven’t taken our dogs for hikes as much as I usually do, but I did take most of them hiking last Thursday. Here’s a great photo of Brookie (left) and Thumper (right) at beautiful Pine Valley Ranch here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Even though they are both smiling, it was a short hike due to a thunderstorm and quite a few people there (both of which made Thumper nervous). ❤️

A couple weeks ago I posted about some puppies my close friend Elisabeth was going to be fostering soon for the Colorado Puppy Rescue. Four female pups have arrived at her home, and will soon be available for adoption. From my friend, the foster mom: My dear cousin's Great Pyrenees, Pepper - a family companion and treasured chicken protector - was visited by a naughty rogue guardian dog from a neighboring property while doing her job in a securely fenced area, well these precious angels were the result. 😅 While maybe not planned, these babes have been surrounded by love since they were born into a home with kids, chickens, and other critters. All four are female and will be amazing family members for anyone looking for a gentle guardian and loyal companion. DNA tests are at the lab, although we suspect dad was Anatolian Shepherd based on the blurry snap (included) they got as he retreated after his break in. 😏
