They study player patterns, learn scoring and strategy, and build confidence speaking under pressure, all while doing something they love. For aspiring young journalists, tennis is the perfect training ground: it rewards preparation, rewards insight, and rewards voice.

Every match called is a rep toward becoming a sharper storyteller and a more curious mind.

There's nothing quite like watching a young tennis fan get their moment with a pro. At the US Open this week, a kid interviewing Ben Shelton, the No. 8 seed who just battled back from a rough opening set to win his first-round match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, is exactly the kind of moment that reminds us why we love this sport.

Kids in tennis learn more than footwork and forehands. They learn patience, sportsmanship, and how to handle pressure with grace, on and off the court. Watching a young fan hold a microphone up to a Grand Slam competitor is a reminder that today's biggest supporters could be tomorrow's champions.

TAYLOR FRITZ - Seeded 9th. He's had experience with the pressure of a deep run at Flushing Meadows, having reached the 2024 final. He also leads the men's tour in total aces this season. His unique hybrid grip and explosive forehand deliver fast cross-court shots that keep opponents guessing, but his recent results have been uneven, and his 2026 season was disrupted after missing four majors with a knee injury.

BEN SHELTON - Seeded 8th, actually ranked ahead of Fritz. He's known for his fiercely powerful serve and athletic style of play, but sometimes struggles with consistency and versatility. He suffered early exits at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year, raising questions about whether he can sustain his best tennis across seven matches. He also beat Fritz head to head in the Dallas Open final back in February, saving three championship points to do it.

MY TAKE: it's close, but I'd lean Fritz for this Open specifically - the serve and forehand combo plays big on hard courts at Flushing, and he's already proven he can go the distance there as a 2024 finalist. Shelton has the higher ceiling on any given day, but his major tournament consistency is the bigger question mark right now. Either way, it's the strongest chance in years for an American man to break that 23 year drought since Roddick in 2003.

Stan Wawrinka, ranked 127th, was initially snubbed for a 2026 US Open wild card, which went instead to American Patrick Kypson.

After Kypson withdrew injured, the USTA reversed course and awarded Wawrinka the spot.

Wawrinka opens against Matteo Berrettini, a rematch of their Wimbledon first-round clash two months ago, which Berrettini won in four tiebreaks. The winner likely meets Djokovic in round two.
