Everybody thinks an athlete has to look fired up before a game.

Yelling. Jumping around. Chest beating. Getting angry.

Dr. Jarrod Spencer says that may be exactly backwards.

Sometimes the athlete who looks the calmest is actually the one who is the most ready.

The goal is not to stay calm forever.

It is to stay calm until it is time not to be.

That is a very different way to think about pregame preparation.

Wait… what if we’ve been doing it backwards?

A lot of us think of life like separate categories.

Faith over here.
Sports over here.
Work over here.
Family over here.

But what if faith was never supposed to be just another category?

What if it’s supposed to be the thing that drives all the rest of it?

That’s what this conversation is really about.

He felt fine. That’s what makes this story matter.

A Florida high school athlete went through an ECG screening and doctors reportedly discovered a heart defect that had gone unnoticed.

This isn’t about panicking parents.

It’s about understanding what your athlete’s normal physical actually checks, knowing your family heart history, and asking better questions when something doesn’t feel right.

One extra question can matter more than you think.

Your kid may be more afraid of disappointing you than losing the game.

That’s a tough thing for parents to hear, but it matters.

Dr. Jarrod Spencer explains how fear of disappointing Mom or Dad can quietly turn into fear of failure.

Kids need to know there’s a difference between:

“I had a bad game.”

and

“I let my parents down.”

That difference matters more than most people realize.

LEFT BEHIND AT 11?!

That fear gets sold to parents all the time.

More tournaments. More camps. More travel. More practices.

And if you don’t do all of it, somebody else’s kid is supposedly going to pass yours.

I’m not against travel sports at all. There’s a time and place for it. But there’s also a point where parents have to ask:

Is this actually helping my kid develop, or are we doing it because we’re afraid not to?

What do you think?

This might be the purest version of youth sports.

No rankings.
No recruiting.
No pressure to perform.

Just kids having fun and making memories without even realizing it.

We spend so much time talking about what youth sports can become that sometimes we forget how great it is at the very beginning.

What age do you think sports start becoming too serious?

09/13/2026

COCKY or CONFIDENT? There’s a difference.

Dr. Jarrod Spencer says real confidence doesn’t need everyone else to see it, hear it or know about it.

It’s a quiet depth of self-belief:

I have the skills necessary to achieve the goal.

But when confidence turns into arrogance, showing off and constantly needing other people to notice?

Dr. Spencer sees something very different underneath it.

Do you agree? Is cockiness actually a sign of insecurity?

THIS REALLY HAPPENED?! 😳

A young football player is headed for the end zone… and a PARENT steps onto the field and trips him before the touchdown.

You can’t make this stuff up.

What would you have done if this was your kid?

When Youth Sports Competes With Faith: Do Families Have to Chose?

Youth sports can demand a lot from families. Practices, tournaments, travel, recruiting, and packed weekends can sometimes force parents and athletes to make difficult choices about where faith fits into the schedule.

In this episode of Booyah Sports Network, I sit down with Shaun Smithson, Executive Vice President of Club Sports for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, to talk about the growing tension between faith and competitive youth sports.

Can families pursue high-level athletics without pushing faith to the side? What role should coaches and sports organizations play? And does it really have to be one or the other?

If you're raising an athlete, coaching a team, or navigating the world of club sports, this is a conversation worth hearing.

Every legend starts in youth sports. We tell the stories that start it all.
