The backup quarterback job behind Dak Prescott is far from settled, and right now Sam Howell looks like he has the edge. The Athletic's Jon Machota said flat out this week that if the Cowboys had to play a game today, Howell is clearly ahead of Joe Milton on the depth chart. Milton has all the physical tools in the world, but Howell brings more experience and a better command of the offense after starting a full season for Washington in 2023. This competition still has plenty of preseason snaps left to shake out, but Howell has the early lead.

Through every practice in Oxnard, Bass has not had a single bad shotgun snap, which is exactly the kind of quiet consistency a backup offensive lineman needs to build trust with a coaching staff. Depth pieces like this rarely make headlines, but they are the difference between a good roster and a great one when injuries hit in November. Sometimes the most important stories at camp are the ones nobody is talking about yet.

The defensive line might be the single biggest reason this defense feels different in 2026. Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, and Rashan Gary have been controlling the trenches in 11-on-11 periods throughout camp, collapsing pockets and setting a physical tone that this defense simply did not have last season. A defensive line that wins up front changes everything behind it, it makes the linebackers faster and the secondary more aggressive. Dallas invested heavily in the front seven this offseason, and camp reps are showing exactly why.

The man they called Big Cat protected Cowboys quarterbacks for thirteen seasons, made six straight Pro Bowls from 1971 through 1976, and helped anchor an offense that stayed in the top ten in scoring every single year of the 1970s. Wright played in five Super Bowls and won two of them, and in 2004 he became the first offensive lineman ever inducted into the Ring of Honor before reaching the Pro Football Hall of Fame two years later. A seventh-round pick who became one of the greatest tackles this league has ever seen.

Howley won MVP of Super Bowl V despite the Cowboys LOSING that game to the Colts, intercepting two passes and forcing a fumble in a losing effort so dominant that voters could not give the award to anyone else. He is still the only player from a losing team to ever win Super Bowl MVP. Howley made six Pro Bowls anchoring the Doomsday Defense, and after decades of waiting, he finally got the call to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023.

Rams receiver Puka Nacua had to exit the session early with the training staff, and head coach Sean McVay told reporters afterward he was not even sure of the exact reason. Nacua led the entire NFL in receptions last season, so any moment he leaves the field early is going to get noticed around the league. Camp battles are intense enough without an opposing star having to step away early.

Cobie Durant and DaRon Bland spent the day matched up against Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, two receivers who combined for over 3,400 receiving yards last season. Dallas surrendered a league-worst passing defense in 2025, and this is exactly the kind of live test new coordinator Christian Parker needed before the real games start counting. Reps against that caliber of receiver do not lie.
