Here are 5 ways to optimize your results before elective surgery:

1.) Go to your pre-admission testing visit and follow their instructions!
—> They’ll review your medical history and go over medications in depth—the timing of what should be continued, adjusted, or held before surgery. Medications can directly affect your body’s physiology, hemodynamics and response to anesthesia.

2.). Make Exercise a Habit!
—> Improving your physical fitness before surgery can help prepare your body for the stress of anesthesia and recovery. Simply put, improving your fitness and strength improves the capacity of your heart and lungs under anesthesia—and can support a smoother, quicker recovery.

3.) Quit smoking, va**ng, heavy alcohol use, and any drug use (including ma*****na).
—> These substances can change your anesthetic requirement and raise the risk of respiratory complications, poor wound healing, cardiovascular instability, and give you more challenges during recovery. I can’t say this loudly enough—we are the folks you want to be honest with! Your anesthesia team will keep you safest when we have accurate information.

Joking aside! This does happen—often from a communication breakdown somewhere in the line.

Prior to each elective surgery, you should receive information from the surgical team with explicit instructions.

Go over them and follow those instructions. They are meant to optimize your outcome for your surgery and help prevent complications.

While cases do cancel, it is almost always because of concerns for your safety.

Yes, I said hunky dory…

The message here is a simple one but often overlooked. Stop seeking perfection. Stop mimicking exactly what others are doing.

There is some truth in utilizing “what works” and what evidence-based information tells us—but just understand that every person is different. Their values, their circumstances, their resources, their priorities.

Don’t forget to enjoy the process of living and self-discovery.

Post-meal walking has been part of daily life in cultures around the world for generations.

Sometimes the best health interventions are the simplest ones. My name is Dr. Christo Frangopoulos. Here are just some of the benefits of this healthy habit that have compelling science behind it:

1. Better blood sugar control
—>Aim for a 10–15 minute walk after eating. This will blunt the post-meal glucose spike by helping your muscles take up glucose. I believe this to be one of the healthiest habits you can do during your day.

2. Better digestion
—>Studies suggest that low-intensity walking after meals can accelerate gastric emptying and stimulate GI motility.

3. More daily movement
—>So many of us are sedentary because of how modern society is structured. Healthy habits like post-meal walking are simple to incorporate and very effective.

4. Better mood & mental health 🧠
—>Exercise is associated with improved mood and mental well. My recommendation? Do this outside! Get some sunshine and take a much-needed break from screens and work.

5. More time for family & connection
—>I love this one because this is another opportunity for connection. Instead of immediately sitting back down after dinner, go for a walk together. Talk. Catch up. Be present.

6. A few minutes to slow down
—>This is my favorite. I often use my walks to reflect, observe, and enjoy being present.

Drop a ❤️ if this speaks to you.
