Tony Stewart Speedway The go-kart track at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds has been in operation since the mid-1970s.

It was originally managed by a group of racing enthusiasts under the banner of the Columbus Karting Club. The track began as a quarter-mile horse track, known for its impressive speeds—and, unfortunately, sometimes violent accidents. In the 1980s, a smaller 1/5-mile track was built, incorporating turns one and two of the original layout. At its peak, the Columbus Karting Club was recognized as the oldest operating kart club in the United States. In 2021, the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds honored racing legend Tony Stewart by dedicating the track in his name. Stewart, a Columbus native, began his racing career there, winning his first championship at just eight years old. He would go on to become a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and a 2020 inductee into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. During the dedication ceremony, Stewart reflected on his roots:
“This is a proud moment for me, being from here, and I don’t think there’s anybody in the world who can say I forgot where I came from. Today’s proof of that,” Stewart said. “It’s where I’m always going to be, and it’s where my heart is.”

In 2024, Premier Motorsports Group signed a three-year lease to manage and promote the newly named Tony Stewart Speedway. They plan to enhance the facility by constructing a new race track, continuing the legacy of grassroots racing in Bartholomew County.

With heavy hearts, we need to announce that the Johnboy Memorial Race is being postponed until Sunday, October 4, the day after the Burris Nationals at Tony Stewart Speedway.

Our family member was moved to Hospice this afternoon. We are uncertain about the timeline ahead, but our focus must be on our family.

We sincerely thank Josh Meyers and M2W for suggesting that we hold the race the day after one of the biggest races of the year The Burris Nationals. We truly appreciate his support, understanding, and willingness to help make this possible.

Thank you to everyone for your understanding, prayers, and support during this difficult time. We look forward to honoring Johnboy together on Sunday, October 4.
Those that have paid parking will be eligible for a refund or put towards the new date.🏁

We truly appreciate all the positive words, texts, and DMs from everyone who supports what we’re trying to do for the youth of karting. Growing the sport starts with getting more kids involved, giving them opportunities, and helping them develop a passion for racing. Without the next generation coming in, the future of karting simply isn’t sustainable.

I want to say a huge thank you to Tony Stewart Speedway. The “back to basics” racing was the most fun we’ve had at a race track in a good while. Thank you for a great night of racing. Thank you for adding the kid kart class to the schedule. Thank you for the patience, and for letting Kole get out there with his big kid buddies to turn some laps at the end if the night practice. We’ll definitely be back.
