On this day, July 2, 1921, Jack Dempsey defended his heavyweight championship against French boxing star Georges Carpentier in the "Fight of the Century." The bout took place at Boyle's Thirty Acres in Jersey City, New Jersey, with 90,000 fans making it one of the largest sporting events ever held at the time. The anticipation surrounding the fight was unlike anything boxing had seen before, with Carpentier entering as a decorated World War I hero and reigning light heavyweight champion, while Dempsey had built a reputation as one of the most feared punchers in the sport.
Despite giving up nearly 20 pounds, Carpentier struck hard the second round, landing a hard right hand that briefly staggered Dempsey. However, the champion quickly recovered and began taking control of the fight with his relentless pressure and powerful combinations. Less than halfway through the fourth round, Dempsey floored Carpentier, who managed to beat the count, but only moments later another crushing combination ended the fight with a knockout, allowing Dempsey to retain his heavyweight title.
The fight became one of the most important events in boxing history, producing the sport's first million-dollar gate with nearly $1.8 million in ticket sales. It also introduced boxing to an even larger audience as one of the first major sporting events broadcast nationally over the radio. More than a century later, Dempsey vs. Carpentier is remembered not only for the action inside the ring, but for changing the business of boxing forever.
