When I'm looking at a score card for someone the first thing I always check is the penalty box. Penalties often keep a good looking ride from being top of the bunch.

Knowing what penalties are possible and how much they're going to cost you is often the best place to start when assessing your score card. From there we can determine what needs to be worked on so that you hopefully won't earn that penalty in your next run.

We're back at it!! Focusing on foundation skills for riders and horses and how we put them together for the bigger and fancier moves in the show pen. Don't show? No big deal, there's always something to learn and expand your horsemanship. Spots are limited, so reserve yours now.

The connections that are made with horses always amazes me. The friendships, the learning, and the feeling of being understood. Every day I'm grateful for the community we are building for the youth in our area. Whether they've been around horses all their lives or are brand spanking new there's always something to learn.

Our new Fun With Horses group is great for kiddos who are horse crazy but may be a little nervous. Fun games combined with solid knowledge to help them feel confident and see if horses are something they want to continue with.

And for kiddos who are ready to jump into riding we have our horsemanship classes available as private and semi-private classes to take their riding further.

When you're practicing a skill with your horse whether it's something you've been working on for a while or a brand new skill don't be afraid to slow things down, take it back to a walk, and really make sure that you have enough time to reward your horse for the slightest try. This will give your horse lots of confidence and help them to be ready to try things at faster speeds.

One thing I wish I'd learned sooner--
there's a difference between practicing and improving.

We naturally think that if we keep practicing the hard thing eventually it will get better. But what we often don't think about is if we're not seeing a change then we may be practicing the wrong thing. I encourage my riders to strive for just 1% better every ride.

These are the first 3 things I coach when it comes to riding correct circles.

1. Divide your circle into 4 equal pie slices. Where each of those points are on the circle we're going to pretend there's a bumper. Your goal is to "bum" that point and keep going to the next.

2. I promise your horse isn't going to magically disappear from under you, look ahead! I always advise to look about a quarter of your circle ahead. This way you can see where your next bumper is and plan a course.

3. While you may be tempted to use your reins to steer while on a circle you'll get mixed results. Try keeping your horse's head bent slightly to the inside with your reins and then using your legs to move your horse in and out on the circle. This will give you more consistent results and will keep the weaving out of your circles.
